Looking at the recent 2014 Budget, and update in the electoral register, things are moving forward fast for 2015/16.

monopolistic greed and uninnovative thinking at its worst.

the big 3 local telcos are all controlled by the same ultimate shareholder - Tumor Sick.

the Consumers' Association is a subsidiary of Aunty Lucy, the kelong worker "union " federation (legislated by law to be the sole legal workers union federation ). Aunty Lucy was expressedly setup for the purpose of a certain political party (which has a large deemed stake in Tumor Sick ) for the purpose of dominating the labor unions. source : Wikipedia

The monopolistic company and Consumer Association have the same ultimate backers... we are screwed

The latest figures from Singapore's IDA show that SMS messaging fell to a six-year low in 2013.

Thanks to Over the Top (OTT) messaging apps. No wonder SingTel wishes to charge.

    Entirely possible.
    Why not?
The whole idea is to apply an artificial barrier.

That is what the COE has achieved. Nothing useful has been produced by the COE. It is just a piece of paper that says you now have their temporary 10 year permission to go and buy a car.

If Singaporeans can live with the COE for the past few decades then why not more of the same for WhatsApp and Skype?

I would suggest that the Fud Club clarify with Singtel on the actual charges before making comments

It was mentioned in the SingTel CEO's speech at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona recently.

She is calling for it, i.e. putting up the proposal for further discussion.

Bear in mind that what she said carried some weights given her position. She may have discussed with the top management of SingTel or maybe even with our relevant authorities before she spoke out at the event.

After her speech, the backlash was an outcry from the general public. Soon after, SingTel clarified that what she meant was to charge WatsApp, Skype, etc for using their networks, and not to end users.

If the proposal is pushed through such as WatsApp, etc have to pay a fee to SingTel for using its network, will WatsApp pass on the some fees to the end users eventually? We will have to see.

Then any apps that uses network will be charged? There will be thousands of apps that uses data transmission, even Samsung Flipboard.

Btw technically is there a way for singtel to block users from using whatsapp?

If the law never pass thru, I think they might reduce the 2gb data plan to 500mb. And every additional 1mb charge $1?

Not anti-Singtel. Have been Singtel customer since mobile phone services started.
However, I think this floating of the idea by Singtel in international conference may be a bit out of line.

    Singtel cannot speak for Singapore.

    Singtel is not Singapore Government.

Singtel is not the only ISP and mobile provider in Singapore.

IDA is the authority that can allow or disallow Singtel to do that.

Singapore government will need to consider, is this a national policy that has national interests at heart?

Or is it a plea for governmental legislation with the sole purpose of enriching private commercial corporation/s?
To artificially charge for something that was originally free, like for example, breathing the air in Singapore.

Can there be governmental legislation to ensure that a particular private company makes extraordinary profits, its shareholders wealthy and its CEO millions $ pay + big bonuses?

Finally, if various governments of the world make this legislation, what is the political price they (individually in their own respective countries) have to pay?

Damn siaysuay, cannot innovate so instead try to exploit other people's innovations. Pathetic.
