Default Macro lens

Hi guys, am using a 20D camera. Recently i thought of getting a Macro lens, but not too sure what brand to buy, with a budget of $600 is it possible? Thanks.

Go for the Tamron 90mm f2.8 Di. Price is around $600.

EF 50mm macro lens is just too short in terms of working distance.

S$750 is a bit out of your budget, but if you can stretch it, you can buy a EF-S 60 mm F2.8 Macro with it.

Cheers,

Cheers,

CP quoted me $630 for new EF-S 60mm (no hood).

Agrees with USM though that 50-60mm lens is too close: if budget can stretch, then a 90-105mm lens is better. Can try to get 2nd hand Tamron 90mm (around $600 new) or Sigma 105mm (around $700 new) if budget cannot stretch.

I am using a Sigma 105mm: a bit soft at 2.8, but from 5.6 onwards it's sharp from corner to corner.

I also vote for the Tamron 90mm. It's very sharp and not too beavy/bulky to carry around.

If you want to use macro to take insects, then 60mm is too short - you'll scare your subjects when you are this close.

Thanks for you guys wonderful advised.

By the way when using a macro lens, not necessary have to move super close in to the subject, ie insects or plants. Cause i never see through the viewfinders how it look like before.

Hi rickygck,
I am not a Canonian but I am also looking for an "1:1" micro lens, I did some research and ask around the CSers. I would share with you my ideas, I am considering the Tamron 90mm F2.8 Di, Tamron 180mm F3.5 Di and Nikon AFD 200mm F4 Micro lenses. You might also check the New version of Tokina 100mm F2.8 who is a real "1:1" lens ( the old 100mm version is 1:2). With you budget of SG$600, I think Tamron 90mm Di is a good one, I am not sure about the Canon USM or L lens, but what I learned from my research is that the Auto Focus is not very important for "serious" micro/macro/close-up photography which I am agree with that, I prefer to Manual Focus for using telephoto lens and portraits most of the times, it give me a feeling of "I am in control"... just my $0.02 idea

Hi,

You have a really wide range in your search for a macro lens. What exactly are you planning on shooting. The price range of the 3 lenses that you mentioned are around $600; $1,250 and $2,000 respectively. The Nikkor 200mm f4 micro is a really sharp lens, but it's heavy and tough to handhold at that focal length.

As for Ricky, the Tamron 90mm just suits his budget and this lens would be recommended if the subjects are insects and plants.

Great sharing!
Don't think am going for the Canon lens this time, as you said Tamron 90mm is a very good consideration. Am into Manual Focus too
Worth more than $0.02 idea.

Hello, am more into abstract and plant (not into insect for the moment. Most likely will be very interested in the Tamron 90mm lens. Any website for review or pictures?

Thanks Papilio, I might go for the Nikon AFD 200mm F4.0, but $$$ ... almost twice as Tamron , the weight for Nikon one is around 1.1kg, and Tamron is 920g. I am actually a newbie for macro, but want to buy a good one and don't want to chase another better one in at least 5 yrs, I think I will start shooting flowers and plants, then moving to insect and bugs, I borrorwed a Nikon AFD 60mm F2.8 micro for shooting flowers, the working distance is very short for 1:1, I was worried that the flower might hit the filter during shoting time

Hi rickygck,
Some Tamron 90mm links, I don't have much as I was mainly focus on the 180mm Di lens, hope it helps a bit

Have a look at the canon's 100mm macro, expensive though.
