Default EOS 300D Users - What's Your Flash ?

Hi

I've been using the EOS 300D now for about 15 months, and so far have not had any complains about it. I'm currently using my 380EX flash (from my older EOS 500) since then.

I like taking indoor sports photography (eg badminton, ice-skating etc), but find that the recycle time is sometimes too slow, or it does not cover the distance.

Would appreciate some help based on the following questions:

(1) 300D users - what flash are you using?

(2) Does it matter if I use a Canon or Metz flash? I've read about some incompatibilities between the 300D and Metz flashes.

(3) What would you recommend? I understand that the 580EX would be an overkill.

Thanks

Robert

Using a 420ex, not shooting fast action so never think about recycle time

I Like the size compare to 550ex and had applied russian hack so can do FEC.

If you want fast recyle time and longer distance than your 380ex? 550ex or 580ex loh.

remember that as your flash-to-subject distance doubles, the amount of light (power) your flash needs to output to maintain the same exposure goes up by four times.

for better range, consider getting in closer, raising your ISO, or getting a flash with a higher guide number (GN), in which case the 580 might not really be 'overkill'.

for faster recycle times, consider getting in closer, raising your ISO, or using an external battery pack.

from my experience, Metz flashes on Auto mode are great if you need them as a main light, but for most intents and purposes you'll be limited to using them with your 300D in M mode. there are always limits to compatibility with 3rd-party flashes (i'm using a Metz 54-series).

hope that helps.

Ans to (1) Sigma 500 DG Super.
Ans to (2) I think is ok.
Ans to (3) I recommend Sigma 500 DG Super for good price about S$400
similar to canon 550EX.
Happy Buying...
