What is a teleconverter? Is if an add-on thing to my original 18~55mm lens or is it a
    500mm tele lens?

its a small piece of thing that mounts between the cam body and the lens and extends focal length by 1.4x or 2x( depending on whether its a 1.4x or 2x converter). usually mount on 70-200/2.8 or longer type prime lens
