Default NZ Sunset and Melbourne Pics

Hi guys, these are the best shots I took from my trip to NZ and Melbourne. Hope you like them.

Sunrise at Kaikoura Beach, New Zealand

Another sunrise pic from Kaikoura Beach, New Zealand

Last sunrise pic from Kaikoura Beach, New Zealand

Scenary off Mt Buller, Australia

Bourke Street, Melbourne, Australia (thanks to Kit for naming the street..heh)

Default Just my personal comment:

[1] The first sunrise pic is gorgeous, I trust that you did not use a orange or sunset filter. Somehow, I think it lacks human/subject interest. It would be nice if a ship sails by or birds flocking in the torching sky. A silhouette of a lady or a couple in the foreground (not in the water!!!) will also do...

[2] The second pic a bit too blue for my liking.

[3] The third pic is lovely including the afar mountains with the shoal of sunshine leading the viewer eye to the glimmering horizon. Nice! But, I would be tempted to lose bits off the top and bottom:

Sorry, I have cropped the pic without your consent
But, the point is, is it better in panoramic?

[4] It's very nice and thoughtful of you to include the snow foreground. Many people, including myself, would often be overwhelmed by the scenery, the cascading mountains, that we failed to stand back a little further to include the foreground in our pics. I think it works very well here as the foreground helps to:

i) deliver a sense of scale or height
ii) ease the otherwise bleak and uninspiring dark 'foreground' and
iii) give more colour contrast to the picture.

To be a little picky, I would lose a bit off the sky and would love to see human interest in the foreground, especially someone in punchy RED!

[5] No comment.

I agree with jasphotography. I find the picture all very good except the 2nd one which is under-expose(I know the lighing is challenging @ that time).

Overall good pictures. I like the new crop jasphotography did. Very nice.

Hey thanks guys! I'll keep your advice in mind for future shots.

Nope, I didn't use any filters save for the UV permanently stuck on my camera. I guess the 707 just overdid itself with its characteristic saturation of the reds..heh

I like the crop of the photo too! It was the diffusion of the sunlight in the mist just below the mountain that caught my eye. Never thought about cropping it to focus on that part.

I miss Melbourne!. Regarding the first shot, there is some human/subject interest element in it. Look closely. Not sure what it is or is it the water playing tricks.

Nah, there wasn't anything in the water when I took that pic. It may be a trick of the light or the top of some rocks jutting out of the water.

Hi Moralis, your shots are very nice indeed. It will inspire me when I visit NZ next Feb. Juz curious to find out how you handle your storage of pictures.

Do you bring along many memory sticks to NZ? Considering that MS is expensive (or any other media like CF, MMC). Cos I will be going there for 10 days and thinking of bringing a digicam over instead of SLR. How many ms you have used? I presume that 500 mb is not enough if you are a heavy shooter?

Any tips to share? Cos I dun think i will invest too much on digital film.

Heya jimtong, glad you like the pics

I brought along a 64mb MS and the original 16mb MS. Shooting at 1280 x 960 at fine resolution, I managed to get about 125 pics on the memory sticks.

I came back with 300+ pics total plus some video clips after 14 days. Solution? I brought along the CDRom driver and USB cable for the camera. Visited some LAN shops to download pics onto CD

The only problem I faced was that NZ's a little behind on technology. With the exception of 1 LAN shop running Win2k, the rest were running either Win98 or worse, Windows NT 4.0.

Sony Memory Sticks aren't very popular there too as its expensive, so not many shops have readers for it. Best is to bring your own reader and driver instead.

They do have a lot of readers for CF cards though. No problems there. Rates are quite reasonable. Like NZD$10 for a 32MB CF Card download including the cost of the CD-R.

Hope the info helps.

Thanks, looks like the best solution for a long holiday trip is to get a fat storage media.

Is really useful to bring a CDRom driver without the need to bring a laptop. How much is it?
How do you actually downloaded the picture files into the CD Rom?

Nope...no editing done to the pics except to crop them. The unnatural colours in the 3rd pic may be due to the slightly longer that usual exposure time I used, 3 secs I think.

Actually, before I went I was looking for a digital wallet, those 1 gb portable HDs that you can somehow download your pics from the camera to it without the use of a PC or laptop. The cheapest I could find was in excess of $500 and only through the internet. The people at Sim Lim didn't know what it even was.

The CDRom driver I was referring to was the USB driver for the camera so that PCs/Laptops could recognise it when it was plugged in. Had to check with the LAN shops there if they allowed installing of additional drivers. Most were ok with it. Only some running Win95 and NT 4.0 were not agreeable coz they were aware how unstable their systems were and were afriad additional drivers may crash them...hehe
