A noob question: NEF format can only be viewed through Nikon Capture?

As topic...

Just got myself a D70S about 2 weeks ago....been shooting in NEF format, and released that the Nikon Capture software provided in the kit is only the trial version.

And the full version cost $1XX. So I was wondering if NEF format can ONLY be viewed through Nikon Capture. Otherwise, I have to change format to jpg when I take my photos.

NEF can be viewing using the PS CS or PS CS2. other free viewers like ifranview or bibble also can view and edit NEF files.

however, NC can do a heck lot more with ur NEF files than these viewers. besides, at 1/10 the cost of PS CS2, its not a bad buy.

Get Nikon View 6. It's free and it does a decent job to process your NEF. Go to the Nikon US site for downloading. Better there cause u do not need to register.

Erm. jonchia was talking about Nikon View, which is free, and downloads don't require pre-registration at the site.

alternatively, there is RAW Shooter or Capture One.

Both of them have received good reviews too.
