    Default Preview of Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm F1.8

    As announced on Wednesday, 29th Oct, ClubSNAP was loaned a preproduction set for 2.5 days (last weekend) to have a preview of this highly anticipated lens. The short preview will be highly image driven, rather than technical. Some of the images will also be shown on the E-M10 preview by Spidey89 which was announced on the same day.

    Comes in 2 different colors, silver or black.

    Here's the official release:

    Olympus Imaging Singapore is pleased to announce the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm F1.8 (35mm equivalent: 50mm) under the M.ZUIKO PREMIUM series. Carrying a compact and lightweight, high-image quality standard lens, this Micro Four Thirds System standard compliant camera is scheduled for release in late February.

    Main Features
    1. ZUIKO QUALITY enables high optical performance from the widest aperture setting
    2. Close-up shooting performance up to 25 cm away
    3. Fast, silent AF so you never miss a shot

    The new M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm F1.8 standard high-image quality lens features a bright aperture value of F1.8, and focal length of 50mm (35mm equivalent) in a compact, lightweight form. Because this lens provides an angle of view that is close to a natural field of view as seen by the naked human eye, it is the perfect lens for everyday snapshots, portraits, and landscapes. The large F1.8 aperture of this lens offers beautiful defocusing effects, reducing subject- blurring in dark indoor shots for more enjoyable shooting, making this a perfect interchangeable lens.

    Main Features Details

    1. ZUIKO QUALITY enables high optical performance

    The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm F1.8 is a high-quality, standard lens that produces beautiful defocusing effects with high resolution, along with the same high optical performance of the popular M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 45mm F1.8, while maintaining a compact and lightweight size.

    Traditional 50mm DSLR standard lenses generally use a Gauss-type configuration. However, to achieve a smaller form, fast and quiet AF, a new lens design for the digital age with an inner focusing system was used. To reduce aberration from the centre to the periphery, 9 lenses including an aspherical lens are lavishly used, demonstrating clear and sharp optical performance.

    Also, by using the Olympus-original ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating, ghosts and
    flaring are suppressed for clear depictive performance even in backlit and other unfavourable shooting
    conditions.

    As a standard lens in the M.ZUIKO PREMIUM high-quality single focal length lens series, this lens
    features sharpness and soft defocusing effects that make it the perfect lens for snapshots, portraits,
    and landscape photography.

    Just as other lenses in the M.ZUIKO PREMIUM series, the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm F1.8 features the
    same attention to detail in textures, giving it a unified feel with the OLYMPUS PEN and OM-D series
    cameras. This lens is available in black and silver to match perfectly with your camera.

    2. Close-up shooting performance up to 25 cm away

    The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm F1.8 can shoot up to 25cm away for close-up photography, with a
    maximum magnification factor of 0.24x at 35mm equivalent (0.12x), able to fit a postcard sized shot (A6
    equivalent) in the screen full size. When shooting close-ups of tableware or food, the aperture setting of
    F1.8 creates soft defocusing effects for table top photos that are a touch different from the average.
    By combining this lens with the separately-sold Macro Conversion Lens MCON-P02, close-up shooting
    up to 17cm away is possible, for easy macro photography at a maximum shooting magnification of
    0.436x at 35mm equivalent (0.218x).

    3. Fast, silent AF so you never miss a shot
    The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm F1.8 is equipped with the MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism
    inner focusing system for fast, smooth, silent, and high-precision AF (auto focusing). When combined
    with the FAST AF of OLYMPUS PEN and OM-D series cameras, you'll never miss a shot. This quiet AF
    is perfect for capturing still images and movies in quiet scenes.

    This lens has 46mm filter thread, weights 136gr, it's small compared to Panasonic 25/1.4, which is a bit fatter and heavier (200g), though same 46mm threads. Here's one of the first few shots I did. I was pleasantly surprised by the output.

    OOC jpg. wide open F1.8. E-M5 was used.

    Cropped shot of the above, can see the details inside the eye (note the tinge of chromatic aberrations can be seen, E-M10 will help to remove that I would suspect, however, I was using the E-M5 on this shot which doesn't optimize the CA in body.

    The AF is fast. Street shooting with tilt screen up, touch screen focus enabled, I was able to capture subjects very easily. And no, there's no rattlesnake sound like the Panasonic 25/1.4 which occasionally suffers from (when used with Oly body).

    Olympus 25/1.8 wide open with E-M1

    GRainy B&W filter. F2.8

    Cross process filter, F2.8

    Please compare optical performance of the USD $400 Olympus MFT 25mm F1.8 against the USD $4,000 OTUS 55mm F1.4.

    One is an AF lens giving very fast AF performance on the MFT camera body.

    The other is manual focus only, big, heavy and lumbering.

    Is the Olympus MFT 25mm F1.8

    • not as good in optical performance as the OTUS and if so, by how many %

    • same optical performance and just as good in every way.

    • better in optical performance than the OTUS and if so, by how many %.

    • made by Olympus in China (or is it Japan?) while the Otus is made by Cosina (with Carl Zeiss licence) in Japan.

    As you rightly mentioned US$400 vs US$4000, one if AF & MF, One is 50mm(equivalent on 35mm)vs 55mm. One is full frame, one is for m43 cameras. Comparing both is akin to comparing toyota vs F1.

    Given the short time we have had, the preview is a quick look at this lens, a side by side image test vs any other lens is not the purpose of this preview. As mentioned at the start as well, this preview is highly image driven, rather than technical.

    Anyways, Happy New Year, Huat Arh!

    An update of the lens, was testing out the starburst, though normally one wouldn't use this lens for landscape, if it can be used or if for those who use a pano head can certainly try those gigabyte shots of multiple shots stitched .
    The starburst of this lens is quite brilliant. But will need to stop down as usual to have that effect.

    All shots done with E-P5 and ISO Low (100), and on tripod. All shots are OOC jpegs. At F13 it's certainly very nice and distinct but some IQ is compromised as diffraction sets in. F8 is still quite acceptable with almost similar IQ as at F5.6.

    @F5.6

    @F8

    @F13
