Default Video recording on W5

I am interested to get the Sony W5 for its video function. I understand it can do VGA size video at 30fps or 15 fps. Can anyone tell me what is the typical file size for a 1 minute video clip at the 2 different fps setting?

I am looking at using it to record a seminar up to 30min long. How big a card should I get (presuming I'm using it at 15fps VGA). Will the batteries last that long?

Hope to hear from those who had this camera or other Sony models that has similar video recording function. Thanks in advance!

A 1 min clip taken at 15 fps is approx 24mb and a 1 min clip at 30 fps is approx 85mb. To record a seminar up to 30min, you will be better off using a mini DV videocam. Tapes are cheaper and offer better video/audio quality.

512MB = 362sec at 30 fps and 1307sec at 15 fps
1GB = 740sec at 30 fps and 2667sec at 15 fps
2GB = 1518sec at 30 fps and 5469sec at 15 fps
4GB = 3001sec at 30 fps and 10806sec at 15 fps

Figures are approx and you will need at least a 1GB card. I've not tried a 30min clip before but i think a set of fully charge batt should be able to last.

Thanks for the numbers, afbug!

I intend to use it for the occasional recording when traveling. I may be thrown out if I bring a DV cam into a seminar and start recording!

That means a 512MB card can record about 20min of video at 15fps. A 1GB card is the minimal then.

It's exactly the black one I'm drooling over...

When is the Sony promotion (with free 256MB MS) ending?

30 fps movie recording are really quite decent quality. Of course nowhere near the DV quality but very usable. Only thing is you can't really shoot for that long as the file sizes are huge.

Btw, for golders out there, the 30fps recording is fantastic for shooting your swing. You can review it amost frame by frame.

Dun block the microphone in front. And go nearer lor......its 1st and foremost a camera not a videocam, so give and take.
