Default My D800 Shutter just dead, at nearly 170,000 only...

Was in the middle of event shooting and suddently show half black image. then after a few more clicks then all black, and gone....

lucky i have a 2nd camera to use if not, those people who won 10th-1st price in lucky draw will not have a photo. haiz..

Nikon has claimed to have tested 200,000 shutter count. So dead at 170,000, will i get a free replacement? lol. i know its impossible. just asking...

    UPDATE:

Changing Shutter cost S$507 at Nikon Service center and after NPS discount is S$429.00.

    Break Down:

    Shutter: 200
    Focusing screen:9
    I-Plate: 138
    general servicing: 160

asked the lady and I-plate is a must change when changing Shutter and general servicing meaning they dismantle and put back the pieces when changing shutter.

Very hard to say. Perhaps u can emphasize u shot event halfway and caused u missed shots for important prize presentation. They might replace the shutter foc out of goodwill.

Anyway update us on the cost of replacement if any.

So my next event shoot I better bring another m43 camera.

Shutter count "tested to" quoted values are just statistical numbers. There is no guarantee. There will be some that fall very short, some will go far and beyond. Yours at 170,000 is already close to the quoted number.

200,000 is the statistically tested number and there will be failures before that number, although that occurrence will be of statistically low probability.

Unless it is under warranty, doubt you can get a free replacement.

Well, thankfully you have a backup camera! Good planning does go far!

Agree with daredevil123, my D700 was tested to 150,000 cycles but I managed to used up till 180,000.

The same thing happened to me last year when I was shooting a fashion show, but because I'm aware of the shutter count + I always carry a second body+lens to avoid changing of lens, it saved my day.

TS, try switching between live view and viewfinder (repeatedly if necessary)could extend the life of your camera if you do shoot non-moving subject and have no time to travel down to NSC.

Rest In Peace, D800 !! Hope that NSC will not charge you too much for replacing the shutter.

That's why last time I sold my D800 when my shutter count exceeding 50K. I will not wait until 170K lah.

But you don't see anyone starting a thread wanting to pay Nikon back when their shutter life goes beyond what is quoted. It's just a guide, personally I don't think anyone should logically hold any camera company to it unless it's way off (e.g. 500 versus 100K).

Anyways, glad to hear that it still went well, that's why even when hobbyists like me go overseas we bring a second body if we can afford it..

I would replace the shutter to give the D800 a new lease of life as it would still be cheaper than buying a brand new one.
NSC charged me $740+GST for replacing my D700 shutter so I assume D800 would be around that price...

As you can see the higher you go in the models it seems that there is more metal / brass screws and plates. ( Nikon DF Shutter looks cheap to me.. )
