You have already mentioned you cannot finish 10 eggs so fast since you live alone. Those 10 eggs have to be paid for. Granted the stall owner probably gets a small discount when they buy in bulk but they still need to pay for it upfront.

Mind you, you are not the only one suffering the effects of price increase. Everybody is!
When the owner can drive a big luxury car while I still have to take public transport, I don't see there is a need to increase the price when he been profiting enough. There is a says "rich get richer, poor get poorer". That's why a 20 cents increase, which is very little in your eye, is a lot in mine. Why I need to pay so much nothing much changes around me? That's why some time I walk home, can see nice skyline, save some fares and reduce some fats, heh heh!

G-man: I don't think every food stall owner is "suffering" per se and the raise from 50 cents to 70 cents on the egg may or may not be unreasonable. It all depends on the individual stallholder. But to me, logically speaking, the price of eggs has not soared significantly in recent times (at least not in the supermarket) hence that could be the reason why the threadstarter finds it hard to stomach.

That said, it will do us good to remember that our service providers (be it food, haircut, etc) are working through CNY if they "rip us off" during the period. Some of them are not locals and are sacrificing precious time with family to provide convenience to us (if they are still here on CNY Eve, this means that they would probably NOT be in time to join up with their families back home for the reunion dinner). I understand the unhappiness with being charged double or having additional charges imposed, but to me, this is just their way of getting "festive OT pay" from us. That's just my view though. You can also view it as their choice, and it is... Just as we also have a choice to stock up on food before CNY season starts and happily cook at home. Or cut our hair a week before to avoid the raise in prices. Do we also forget that the price of food soars during the festive period?

An article that was circulated a while ago, that is worth reading since it is vaguely relevant to the conversation here. Cheers!

Why compare with others? You have your hardship others have theirs too. And we won't know what they have been through to get to where they are.

Anyways for me at least, a 20 cents increase for a cooked egg is acceptable since the original price is 50 cents. That's just my 2 cents.

    Sheesh, listen to yourself, it's all I, I, I.
A lil' unfair to expect the stallholder to conform to your proclivities, no?
The stallholder's also taking that risk - stocking up, spoilage and wastage.

So donít get mad, get even.
You canít expect things will go your way as a person living alone - no buying in bulk, economies of scale, etc.

While it may sound auntie'ish/uncle'ish to some, these are certainly good tips for stretching that dollar. Costs are going up faster than our salaries, we will need to stretch that dollar as far as we can.

That's why I need to boycott this kind of act. 20 cents increase, not much to most but not me since I know it's 40% increase. Other stalls under the same area also didn't increase like the "zi cha" did. Do support all those stalls with price increase and in the near future (2020 maybe?), I hope those who supported the 20 cents increase don't complain why an egg cost $2 now!

Nothing wrong with boycotting a certain stall since you aren't pleased. Am not saying you are wrong to vote with your wallet, you should. But coming online to gripe about this 20 cents increase when you are prepared to splurge $6.50 on the main course is just ironic.

And nobody says they support the increase. All everyone who hasn't sung the same tune as you is doing is trying to see from more than your perspective.

Anyways, have yourself a Merry Christmas.

    I support your action!

I think all these price increase are related to the cost of living in Singapore. If millions of people are squeezed into a small island, everything will become expensive, houses, food, etc. The stall owner is probably just trying to raise money for his COE or COV. Yet when all the people come to our shores, labour salaries and income become more competitive and squeezed too. Everyone wants to increase prices.

I not going to get from there again, I rather get 10 eggs from shops, cook myself also at 100%cheaper (2 eggs at 70 cents or less) Year 2020, it might be $1.2 per egg. Next time start own hen better, haha!
Read the first page... don't bother reading all the three pages now... but what you have mentioned... I really don't understand. the store vendor did warn you that the egg went up by 20 cents (don't care if it was 40% or 100%, that is beside the point). If you find that the increase is too much, you should have forfeit getting the egg (yeah, yeah, you mentioned that you didn't think fast enough, that is your own problem, am I wrong to say that?) And if the vendor actually warn you about the increase, it doesn't actually qualified as day light robbery, unless you have no choice but to pay that increase, which you don't.

Of course you can start owning your own hen (and I assure you, it can be pretty fun cleaning their poops and stinks), then wasted more money and time feeding, making sure that your hen don't die of sickness, endure complains from neighbours, etc etc.

I think its hard to think when eating, all the blood goes to your stomach
Plus he had an egg craving, make things more difficult.
Now.. after he went home, he thought about it and it sinks in..
    Sounds familiar ?

Sorry. Don't sound familiar at all...

I guess it was just me. I am stingy when it come to money, don't care if I am starving or have craving for whatever food, I make sure that I know exactly how much I am spending.
