Anyone uses iPod Photo for storage n transfer while travelling?

I will be backpacking for a few months and will require a sturdy portable media storage device for my digital photos transfer and viewing. iPod Photo is my top choice since it plays music as well, but after reading some conflicting user reviews(freezing, etc), Im torn about buying it. Anyone has this and recommend it? Or wd a normal portable storage device be a better option?
