    Reminds me of one proverb:

"You were not made to dig in dirt with chickens, but to soar the clouds with the wings of an Eagle!"

Because there is another rule briefed to the monkeys:
"Whack 9 monkeys and you are out of here". So you want banana or freedom?

The bunch of bananas kind of reminds me of the so called "we welcome your feedback/feel free to speak your mind/open door policy" that management likes to talk about but never practices i.e. those with dissenting viewpoints are always shot down. Even the recently retired head of the civil service commented in a newspaper article that he believes a group of people given the same information should always arrive at the same solution. During the recent casino debacle, Harry also made it clear that those in parliament who still disagree with the decision should resign. So the banana is there, its just that you cannot pick it without getting hammered!

However, when a monkey reaches for a banana, water is sprayed at the remaining 9 monkeys. And often the monkey that reaches out for the banana gets whacked by the other 9.

Soon, one monkey is taken out, and another put in. Of course, the new monkey reached for the bananas, the others began to whack him furiously.

This let the new monkey know he's not supposed to go for the bananas.

Soon, another monkey is taken out and a new one placed in. Similarly the scenario reenacted. The new monkey got whack by 9 of the monkeys, of which included the not-so-new monkey that just joined in even though it didn't understand why the need to whack the new monkey.

Everything was repeated, and soon the room held 10 monkeys that whacks any monkey that tries to reach for the banana. No monkey ever knew the reason to why they should do it. They just do.

And everyday in my office I see a new monkey reaching for the banana. Sigh.
    Hi espn,

I heard this story told to us in a paid self-improvement program. Actually what you have described is only half the story. Eventually, one monkey did reach the top and grab the bananas he has been eyeing for; and this shocked the rest of them because that was something they never thought possible.

And yes, this monkey story is used to illustrate human nature and how we should learn to “break free” from tradition and reach for the unthinkable/ impossible e.g. people invented the first automobile, aero plane, spaceship landing on the moon, etc. As soon as one person succeeds in something new; everybody knows it is now possible. This new invention will benefit the community at large and over time, someone else will look for alternatives to existing problems again – he/they will invent something new … the chain cycle goes on to benefit mankind.

Tot the moral of the story is to open BIG mouth and ASK WHY?

If every new monkey asked the right question... knowledge would be preserved.... OTOH... ALSO those "old" monkey who does the bashing, should state the reason and clarify.

so which side of the story are you on espn?
-1 of the new 10 monkeys?
-1 of the removed 10 monkeys that knew what was wrong about the bananas or
-the humans that controlled the eintre process?

We always see things that we want to see. To me, you're telling the story from the human controller prespective. Of course you'll be thinking they're stupid. But look on a higher level, would there be another higher being(management) looking and laughing at you as well? The 10 monkeys thought not. Are we just the 10 monkeys in another level?

For the 10 new monkeys do not know what is wrong becos nobody told them. Like philshots said, in the end 1 of them went ahead and took the banana.

Too often we are just too self-centred that when majority agrees with a given situation, we think it's the right thing to do and mock at others who did otherwise. When a higher level will mock at our foolishness without our knowledge.

So who are the real monkeys? nobody knows.

YYK: I happened to be one of the older original monkeys around. They've yet to replace me with a newer monkey.
