Default The E-1 discontinued already?

Hi guys, I was checking the price for the E-1 and E300 from MScolor and was replied that the E1 was discontinued......Thats kinda sad cause I was considering the E1 (among others) to be my first step in to digital primarily because of the kit lens.

E1 is nice but don't just look at the kit lens as thinking this way takes away a lot of advantage off a DSLR, especially since 4/3" CCD isn't really big.

E1 discontinued means a new E is rising. patience is much needed.

ya, u can't just look at the kit lens alone to make a decision, look at the whole range & see what Oly offers. so far every Oly users r very surprised with the EXCELLENT OPTICAL QUALITY lenses manufactured by a not-so-big-brand, may it be pro grade or consumer grade. u need to test out one yourself. i tested the E1 quality over the counter in one of those exhibition. brought my own CF card there & snap a few rubbish for testing. the image quality finally won me over. i m sure u can find a used set very cheaply here or overseas.

good luck with your purchase.

But I remember the E1 is still being advertised as part of the May promotion so it can't be discontinued. Maybe it's just out of stock because of the promotion.

Hi grantyale,

Sorry, but after reading your posting for a number of times, i still don't get what message you are trying put across.

pscion12, maybe MScolor no more carry or run out of E1 stock and the sale person you contacted just wanted to sell you a camera. Did you check with CP, TK or others.

I agree. E1 discon but no news for new E system yet! How can over month a new E system pop out when no press information is out? All we know olympus would be coming out with 2 new E system.

I strongly beleive that it hasnt been discontinued. Oly only planning to bring their new E-system tentatively either in the end of 2005 or 1st,2nd quarter of 2006. I feel that as MSC doesnt had the stock they just want to push what they have (E-300) with them by stating that E-1 is out of stock.

One of the thread starter at dpreview speculate that the E1 "sensor" had discontinued.

nah, it hasn't been discontinued. not until Oly officially announce a new replacement. which by the way, is taking too long!

but good things are worth waiting for, like the Nikon D2X.

Ok ok my bad... just went over to check with them. They still carry it. The offer for the E300 was better though, body+kit lens+telephoto zoom lens+2 1gb card for $1699.

My bad.
What I was trying to say was, 4/3" CCDs are even smaller than APSc format and Kodak is not doing too good a job containing noise on the chip especially with the 8mp chip - and with a kit lens attached to it, you get an upsized-E20-alike.
The kit lens is no doubt of good value but shouldn't be the deciding factor when you are choosing the camp to join. Some casual reviews have shown that the 4/3 lens lineup offers pretty good optical and build quality. But when it comes to availability and pricing, it's another story. I am seeing the 4/3 system standing up against C & N soon, especially when Panasonic starts to contribute to the electronics part.

I C. I agree with you on the noise issue for high ISO. Lucky me is that i don't often shoot in the dark. If i need to, i always use flash or apply noise reduction s/w if required.

As for 4/3 system standing up against C & N, we can only wait and see what Olympus and Panasonic can come up with. Anyway and btw, i don't really care, i just want to enjoy shooting with what i have now.

Buy what you prefer and shoot what you like (but nothing illegal, okie ).

have used the E1, while not exactly noise-free like canon it's better than the d100.
and a highly abusable body.
the lens is very gd value for f2.8-3.5 and the whole thing is weathersealed.
and it is lighter than the 10D.
yeah I know I'm mentioning all the old cams but those I tested it against.
what's so bad about it?

It should be an MM, I'm using the 167mt, I haven't use the lens yet cause i'm still playing around with the lens in a cap. Regarding sharpness...well.... photodo rates it a 4 but I should be taking photos with it soon then I'll know. And boy....the lens is one heavy piece of glass and metal.
