    Default Speakers or Receiver??

Hi to all audio and video masters....

I will be shifting to my new place in july and i hope that you can answer some of my questions.

I currently have my home theater system consisting of Toshiba DVD player (SD100 i think), Sony STRDE875 receiver and Sony SA-VE835ED speakers w/active sub. (cost me a bomb back in 2002)

I intend to upgrade some of my items when i move in.

I will be getting 42 inch pioneer plasma and a DVD player with HDMI connection that can play DVD-audio/SACD.

    The question i have is......

Should i change my 2 front speakers for a better performing speakers
    or
    Should i change to a better multi-channel receiver/amp..??

My budget is up to SGD 5k........

    Your advises is appreciated..

    Cheers

upgrade your speakers first. that will give you the most amt of sound improvement compared with changing the receiver, which will do for now.

for the speakers, do you want something small that your wife will like or go for the normal box speakers which will sound better?

if you upgrade, you should change the entire 5.1 speaker set so that all of them sounds harmoniously. no point changing just the front speakers.

also, if your system is mainly for surround sound and home entertainment, make sure you spend more on a good subwoofer, that makes a very great difference to movies.

Since you are intending to get a Pioneer Plasma (435?) then I would suggest:

DVD Player - Pioneer DV-939A with HDMI and i-Link (abt SGD1300). This player is "match-made in heaven" with the Pioneer 435 plasma.

AV Receiver - Pioneer VSX-AX5AiG with i-Link (abt SGD1900). Award winning and highly recommended amp in almost every HT review.

That will leave you about 1800 for a good pair of fronts and a timbre matching centre.

Im a member in XP as well ... anyway i'll recommend you go with carlim's advice.

Speakers wise, you can take a look at offerings from Definitive Technology / KEF / Mission / Mordaunt Short / Acoustic Energy to replace your sony speakers.

Tks, was down at SLS earlier at Alpha Audio,

The guy reccomended me to just change my 2 front speakers to Whafedel? Evo floorstanding in piano black. (abt 1.8k). Keep my amp and sat speakers and the active subwoofers.

In fact he was saying that there is no pt spendin on HDMI DVD players since the price is high as it is a new pdt.

Told me to get a stand alone CD player for music.

Now this is a cheap option.

I would do that myself. I have the same amp as yours. I can tell this Sony Amp is actually quite powerful and clean if you are able to match with the right speakers.

See what kind of music suits you. If you love clean bass, then the Evo would be a good choice as it will match well with your current subs and satellites.
