    Default Memory dilemma, Advice needed!!!

    I'm planning to go Australia in Nov for 2 weeks with my family. Do u think it is better to invest in buying more SM card or to buy an ImageTank or X-Drive? I'm using a 2100UZ.

    Option 1:
    2 128MB SM combined with my existing 96MB will give me a total of about 300 shots at high res or 700 shots at normal res. Cost: $170

    Option 2:
    An Imagetank or X-Drive with a 10GB HD will give me a whopping 9000+ shots at high res. Cost: $400 for Imagetank and $440 for X-Drive. Offers support for Compact Flash type I & II, SM, SD, MS.

    Me still deliberating over which option to choose. Would like to hear all your opinions. Thks a lot.

    Erm, let's see...

    Main question... whats your budget?

    That would greatly help determine the issue...

    I do not know his/her budget. But I guess he/she has the budget. Bum has the budget. Just that if bum uses the $400 for the IT, bum will have less $400 to spend on her trip. On the other hand, if bum does not get enough storage, will end up with not enuff good pictures for the trip. That is the dilemma. By the way, bum, why don't you rent from the firefish's company? that will solve your problem. I do not know, try to search his website
    Hope this helps.
    (* another is I found that 300 pictures are more than enough already, don't to be so greedy <--- I myself have thought of this for long holidays )

    Hi

    If buget is not a big problem, I guess it's cheaper to get the Image Tank in thge long run. You can take more than 300 shots since you are going for 3 weeks. Don't constraint yourself to that few shots...take more and make your trip a memorable one.

    I checked already. Rental for 2 weeks is enough for me to buy a 128MB SM.

    I think 300 pics is considered little considering that I will be touring Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Melbourne is home to the Great Ocean Road where the views are postcard perfect. Scared that my finger won't stop snapping. Another tthing, i will be going in a group of 7 and will only be relying on my UZI.

    The image tank is worth it if you have other uses for the hard disk when not on holiday.... (eg: installed in notebook).

    300 pics would be enough for me on a 2 week 'general' holiday (plus the fact that you can delete the lousy shots and free up more space).

    Lets see..

    Option 1: More Media
    Cost = $170
    Result = 300+ shots.
    Cost per shot = $0.56
    Pros:
    1. Lower upfront cost.
    2. Lesser things to lug along.
    Cons:
    1. Limited to size of available media
    2. SM's limit is 128MB with no higher capacity expansions in sight.

    Option 2:Image Tank / X-Drive
    Cost = $440
    Result = 9000+ shots
    Cost per shot = $0.048 (11.54 times cheaper than Option 1)
    Pros:
    1. 9000+ shots!!
    Cons:
    1. Higher up front cost.
    2. More things to bring along

    Costings are screwed since both offers (almost) unlimited reusability on investment.

    Feel free to add more..

    enjoy your trip!

    If I were to go on a 2 weeks trip (or even 1 week!), I'd definitely pick an X-Drive or Image Tank.

    Went to Malaysia last time for 3D2N and took 300+ photos, IIRC (most of them photos of myself and my family). There were a number of shots that looked good on my (then) G2's LCD, but turned out to be unsatisfactory (blur etc) after viewing on my PC back home.

    Point is, with an X-Drive / Image Tank, you can take as many shots as you want without having to worry about how much space you still have left, and whether it would last for the remaining duration of your trip.

    As Erwinx said, you can get the Image Tank and use the hard disk from any notebook lying around unused - I'm sure you know someone you can borrow the notebook from.

    One other option is to visit one the many internet cafes in Australia (something like $1 per hour), and upload your pics to a place like Imagestation, which offers free unlimited storage. Then erase the cards and use again! But choose a broadband internet cafe - many of them still run on 56K modems. An added benefit is that even if the plane crashes (choy choy) and you escape only with your life, your camera and memory cards and Image Tank destroyed, your photos will still be on the internet!

    But for me, Image Tank is definitely the best choice.

    For more info on Image Tank or X-drive,
    go to:
    http://www.printamax.com

    Tidbits:
    Image Tank is known as Image Bank in Europe and US.
    X-drive is now called X's-drive because of copyright issues

    cheers!
