Thread: Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T* Lens - for Nikon F Mount

Zeiss MTF seems a tad bit better than the Leica Summilux, although Summilux is sharper across the field, and both seem better than the new Nikon 58mm. In practise it may be difficult to tell them apart in pictures. Naturally for the Zeiss you're talking about a big fat heavy lens, so cannot compare with the Leica, who are tasked to design small compact lenses of high quality, and the limitations they entail.

Yes, for sure. Remember, there are also the other 50mm ASPH f/0.95 and f/2 APO lenses.

check out the full resolution shot with D800E .. the micro contrast and texture wide open is just crazy
the Nikkor 58mm 1.4G good as it might be is nothing much compared to the Otus wide open if we're talking from purely optical point of view.
Of course if u really need AF then....

At the 1400  934 resolution they posted the photos I don't understand the excitement.

Nikon is playing catch up for sure, and we should welcome it. Most other brands have their no compromise flagship 50mm lenses, e.g. Canon, Sony, Leica, and now Zeiss. Some pixs:

Canon has the 50mm f/1.2L II (left is the Nikon 1.4G):

Compared to the three current Leica 50mm ASPH lenses:

The older Nikon f/1.2 compared to the older non-ASPH 50mm Leica:

    The Otus is over-priced.
A 55mm F1.4 should never cost that much.
The finishing and barrel markings are poorly executed. This lens should have been made to cost below USD$1,000.

Well, it's made in Germany, it isn't made in Japan.

This is the minimum standard expected of a lens made in Germany at that price.
(edit - iamge deleted - NA since some one else confirmed Otus is actually made in Japan by Cosina)

Read the thread. Comparing to silly Cosina-made Otus 55mm ƒ1.4 which has a RRP of US$3,999 (before VAT)
ZeroDivine has confirmed that the Otus is made in Japan by Cosina (with a Carl Zeiss label); and NOT made in Germany.

Even lower priced 50mm F2 Summicron has much higher quality barrel finish and markings. You can see the difference although it is an old lens, probably used for many years. For example, this 50mm 3Cam R F2 Made in Germany lens currently on sale in eBay for US$595.

I guess it is anodized aluminum for the Zeiss vs brass for the Leica. We can take reference from the Zeiss 135mm f/2 APO Sonnar T* that is not cheap either. Tack sharp and highly corrected. Cannot fault it except for its weight. The Otus seems to be designed one notch higher. Really cannot wait to see how this lens will perform.

The 85mm ZM lens is made in Germany. I did not find its construction more superior than its Cosina brethren.

Whether MIG or MIJ, that's not relevant anymore, since it has been confirmed that the Otus is made by Cosina in Japan.

The point is for US$3,999, the Otus lens barrel markings are disappointingly inferior.

You might want to look at a Cryptex instead if you want decorated barrels.

At US$3,999 how much better optically is the Otus compared to the best 50mm/55mm Nikkors?

    It has no AF.

It does not justify the price difference.

I do not know how superior this lens offer compare to other offering.

One thing for sure is it is such a waste to use on a DSLR Nikon or Cannon , this kind of optic should only justify a Digital Back capture , something like the ALPA FPS, Sinar M Body or Horseman Digiflex II. Couple with a 80mb back, then you are truly 'wow !!!'

Anything other than these, is a bad compromise.

The 55mm f/1.4 sports 12 elements in 10 groups, six of which are made of glass so rare it’s more valuable than gold,

Without those ugly yellow markings I would consider it. It looks more like a cine lens to me...
