Hello all..
Ok.. this sounds kinda funny, but i'm trying to cross camps here, but need a bit of advice on this. I shoot nikon ALL the time (hides) both for work(digital) and for family stuff. However, i would like to start out with the canon family for film as my department started bringing in more canon lenses for us to loan. Hence. Though i do have the 1N rs, i'm considering a 1v hs for around 1200 $ usd in 10/10 condition (like new, with 2 yrs of warrenty left) My concerns are: 1. how's the camera in terms of reliability, function and control 2. is 1200usd ok for pricing? 3. how much are cathay/allen/tcw selling the new/used bodies for? Any insight from any canon film shooters(still left) with this camera, would greatly be appreciated. Regards ![]() |

for body alone in sg, it usually goes for at least $SGD1500++ to at most $SGD2000+ , for 2nd hand
reliability, function and control..definitely first class.. unless u get a lemon. if u are used to the f5, then the physical weight will not be an issue the main diff between 1v and 1nRs is - 45pt AF - ETTL, auto high speed sync flash - more custom functions |

The 1V HS is capable of 10fps like the 1N RS but it does so without having to lock the aperture in place. Say you're using a 24-70 f2.8L lens. So if you're shooting at f2.8, it won't make a difference, but lets say you're shooting at f4 for a lens with a constant f2.8 aperture, then the aperture blades will "close" down to f4 the moment you depress the shutter to focus, causing a darker viewfinder. Note though that this only happens in RS mode (which allows the full 10fps) but not in the slower high-speed mode.
Furthermore, even though the 1N RS has a pencillical mirror/prism which does away with the need for a mirror mechanism (zero blackout), the viewfinder is darker and you lose 1/3 stop of light (I think). There is definitely light loss, not sure how much exactly. And yes, with the 1V there is viewfinder blackout but its so fast you'll harder notice it compared to the 1N RS. Personally, I'll spring for the 1V HS if you're planning to still shoot film for a while... the body is simply awesome and I finally got to own one about 2 years ago! Never regreted buying it! Just my US$0.03 cents worth! |

1VHS needs to be use with that canon battery (cant remember the name). If using 8x AA batteries, you get only 7fps i think. unless you mod the battery carrier, than you get 10fps with 8x AA batteries.

welcome to EOS.
the 1nRS loss of light is -2/3 stop. derivation: actual amount of light loss => in terms of number of "stops" lost 1/2 => 1 1/3 => 2/3 since u have the 1v..sell us the Rs at cheap price :-) |

Very fast autofocus. Faster than Nikon. Long shutterlife . User custom with tons of features using the optional cable link usb software.

Hey F5
Actually got film user. Me. Better than that. Using the manual focus Canon FD lens + bodies. Well soon you may be buying 1Ds Mk2 as well. Canon pushes the R&D and production envelope US jet fighter test pilots call it ... "pushing the envelope" they try more and more daring things when they test the new planes. So Canon got to push the envelope by not only introducing a mid-range full frame digital SLR. But make it 12 MP and price it below the competitors' current 8 MP 1.6x digital SLRs. This kind of thing is like a tsunami. If you operate a shop and you have lots of stock of the more costly, lower MP, 1.6x, old stock digital SLRs, you're dead. |

Actually... i'm looking forward to the camera and really wanna bash the hell out of it.
Autofocus wise, i think it's roughly the same as the F5, both having the nicad batteries installed... but ultimately, the most important thing is whether it can LAST in the field. Will be doing an assignment in Thailand later this month, at a training base called Kanchanaburi or something... not too sure yet. Under request from my department, i'll be bringing these bodies: the F5, 1vhs, markII and 2h there to have "field tests" on them based on the normal lens assortment. I'll keep you guys informed. ![]() |

Hello ricoh...
Yup.. film rocks. and well, that's canon for u and their advances with digi tech... FAST and good. ![]() i'm currently using the 1Ds mk2 for my assignments but i still rely on film bodies as backups as i do stay out in the field for over 3 wks at a go with no source of backups, and no field bases to go to at times. (uploads to network, etc) Hence... i rely very much on film to get my assignments back to my editors in time for publishment. But oh well.. the 1d mkII iz soooo nice.... i just wish that canon wouldn't upgrade their techies soo fast and let us really "enjoy" full usage of their bodies. (when new model come, company takes back the existing one.)

hi people... i'm now STARING at the EOS 1vhs sitting in front of me on my table...
Though i've used it once without the grip, my, with the full PB built in, it's BEAUTIFUL!!!! hehehe.. though it looks just like a 1d mkII, i would say it weighs more, and has a slightly different grip. Side by side with my ol F5, they certainly go hand in hand in form. Function wise, i'll be taking them both on a run through at work tomorrow with a 17-35 2.8 (nikon) and a 16-35 2.8 (canon). Will post results later this week. Till then ![]() |
