Default Call for volunteers to teach basic skill photography to elderly

    Hi Shutterbugs!

Isn't it fulfilling to have acquired all the photography skills and equipment knowledge through trial and error, hardwork and enthusiastic volunteering at friends' and company functions? Would you like to polish your skills in *teaching* what you've learned, ESPECIALLY to the elderly?

If you have a heart for the elderly folks, you'll also know it's not easy to teach them complex skills like photography.

But what if... the elderly folk also have limited short-term memory and short attention spans, but reward you with laughter, story-telling of their colourful lives and pride when they succeed in shooting visually-satisfying photos on their own?

The place that I work in, is a non-profit organisation that provides daycare for dementia elderly.

In May & June this year, we successfully organised a pilot run of 6-session photo tour for elderly with mild dementia. Among others, we visited the Botanical Garden, Chinatown and Singapore Zoo for outdoor shoots. You should have seen how their faces light up when they review their photos at the end of the tour!

In Oct/Nov this year, we are mounting the 2nd photo tour, also with 6-session. Thus, we seek a few volunteer amateur shutterbugs who can understudy our professional photographer and potentially conduct future runs of this programme.

    Volunteer requirements:
    1. Free on Thursday morning from 24 October to 12 December scheduled every Thursday and be punctual.
    2. Ability to communicate in Mandarin and Hokkien (plus other Chinese dialects) is major plus. A few elderly can speak English but majority are Chinese-speaking.
    3. Have basic photography skills.
    4. Keen interest to teach or learn to teach elderly with mild dementia.
    5. Previous volunteering experience or passion is a plus.
    6. Interested to learn from a seasoned professional photographer.
    7. Understand that your services are pro bono but the organiser will provide refreshments and meals.
    8. Understand that outing locations have not been confirmed but you will be informed accordingly.
    9. Understand that all photographic equipment for the course are basic and will be provided by the organisers.

What will the volunteer be involved in:
    1. Pair up with an elderly to handle a basic point-and-shoot camera and assist in composing shots
    2. Engage the elderly and keep him/her interested
    3. Assist with the needs of the elderly (e.g. fatigue, thirst), as and when needed
    4. Undergo a training and pre-tour recce of outing locations to have an understanding of the programme flow

Interested? Need further details? Please leave your name in this thread or PM me.

Thanks for reading this appeal for volunteers!

Shared as well - I hope there are many volunteers! I would, but have work on weekdays. If it is moved to the weekends or after office hours, please feel free to PM me. Kudos for this effort, it is a meaningful initiative.

I am speaking from my personal experience as I was part of the volunteer team in the pilot programme that started in May.

During that time, I was hungry and passionate for life and I wanted to spread this across to everyone I met, especially to the troubled ones. Hence, I applied to be a volunteer in this prog and other volunteer work thereafter. The main bulk to this prog is the interaction portion and not of our fanciful technical knowledge about photography. Aperture, shutter speed, iso etc are terms that will not be used in the conversation. Instead, the language of reconnection is more important. I promise you, the emotional capital you gain from volunteering will mould you in ways beyond your imagination. So Keep Calm & Volunteer with them now! ^_^

I am really sad that this time round I will not be able to make it or else I will definitely help out.

    Hi Goderic
Thanks for your insights and experience on the program. Indeed it is a moving experience to touch and make others happy.
Also many thanks to edutilos- for spreading the word, we all do as much as we can. God bless you all for "paying it forward".

Just a short additional information, the start date has been confirmed on 24th October. The program will run every Thursday from 10am to 2pm. The program is scheduled to end on 12 December 2013.
The changes are done on the original post above as well.
    Cheers
