Default DX lens on F80?

is it possible to use the DX lens that comes with D70 on F80?

technically, the mount is the same.
but the difference of the DX-coded lens is that the image circle is designed for APS-C sized sensors so therefore it will not be large enough to cover the full area of your 135 film (the F80/N80 Is a film camera, after all).
can't say i've tried but you'll probably get severe vignetting.

I've tested all the DX lenses on my F100 before :-

1) 10.5DX - extremely funny looking vignette
2) 12-24DX - vignette from 12-18mm
3) 18-70DX - vignette from 18-70mm
4) 17-55DX - vignette from 17-25mm

thanks, but apart from the vignetting effect, can i say that i would be able to get a wider angle than that specified in the DX lens? As contrast to, you know, when one use a normal lens on the D70, you got an extra 1.5 tele.

if this is true, i am thinking of experimenting some wide angle effect on film or slide, then scan and PS to put some creative effect on the vignet portion.
But of course, it would be good to get a normal WA lens.

No. Technically speaking, DX cannot be used on film bodies FULLY.

And no, I don't want to argue about what from 18mm onwards can be used etc.

You're confusing focal length with crop factor... focal length is the same regardless of digital vs film. What changes is the resulting image size produced by the lens on the capturing media (Film or APS sensor). So in short a DX lens--especially the wider focal lengths--won't work on film/full 35mm frame bodies.

If you'd like to get really wide focal lenths, you'll probably have to get the Sigma 12-24 or a full-frame fisheye

no. you won't get wider than that specified in a DX lens. For a DX lens on a D70, you still got the extra "1.5 tele".

DX lens was intended for APS-C D-SLR (smaller sensor). some internet site have tried it on Film cameras but keep saying don't zoom upto there and avoid aperture upto blah... so to avoid this kind of restrictions, IMHO just use DX for DX cams

The 12-24DX still provides me with good images on slide as an 18mm lens... not bad leh

it's a high price to pay for a "18-24" lens for a film SLR though (if the poster didn't have a dslr).

This may help.

From the document:

For this reason Nikon do not recommend use of DX Nikkor lenses on 135 formatcameras.

This DX story is certainly very well-written and easily understood! Thanks for sharing!

It's cheaper than buying 18mm, 20mm and 24mm primes and considering it's performance at those focal ranges are reputedly as good as those primes...

The primes are faster though, so it's not a like-for-like comparison. If there's a set of F4 primes, they would likely be cheaper.

Good point, but we can only really compare with what is available.

Hehe.. getting off-topic... slightly. Hope viperMako has gotten the answers from the discussion.
