Default Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 Question

Can the ST-E2 be used as a studio flash trigger, say for bowen or Elichron system. Does it works with ETTL II flash such as EX 580...

Thanks

It'll work with 420EX, 550EX and 580EX. Not too sure for studio flash though. My guess is it might not work.

nope, it doens't work with studio flashes ... or well, it does occassionally. But thats just pure random luck. Prob will trigger off the strobes once every 5 shots ? Do note that the ST-E2 is not built as a IR trigger for light strobes, only for triggering off canon slave flashes in ETTL mode.

It does work well with Canon flash even under continuous burst mode. I had a lot of fun with it at a wedding dinner last Saturday

Correct me if I am wrong old birds...

From what I know, studio flash uses radio wave, but Canon wireless flash uses another type of signal... if I not wrong, light or something, that is why the ST-E2 range is quite short, and the flashes cannot be behind the ST-E2.... unlike studios ones, using radio wave....

The ST-E2 is on the hotshoe. I carry the flash (one only) in one hand and my camera in the other This way, I could position the light anyway I wanted.

Most strobes still allow trigger via IR detection, that may explain the random triggering.

If you're holding the flash and camera in hands - wouldn't a cord be better especially considering the price?

I'm thinking of getting one but...hell...it's so expensive.

I have the cord too which I was using during the day. The advantage of the ST-E2 is that it fires off the AF assist beam to help the camera to focus (vs having to point the flash in the right direction if the cable is used). I was just playing around though. Usually, I have the flash on a bracket.

So you shoot with one hand, and flash in another??? COOL!!!

Did you use any soft box or something for your flash???

So what you usually do is mount it like a hammer head flash??? But can the ST-E2 work like this??? Or do you use cord instead????

nope, not hammerhead. the bracket will position the flash above the lens and allow flipping of the flash when I shoot in portrait orientation. ST-E2 or cord could be used.

YESS!! it CAN Trigger Studio flash
but you need to do a lil bit homework, tape the 4 pin at the bottom ur ST-E2 and whoala.. you got the transmitter in TTL

and ofcourse it can work with E-TTL 2, (as far as i know e-ttl2 is from the camera not from the flash)

Use lightsphere in your flash, hold by hand and if u use Canon Flash the angle reciever is better compare with 3rd party flash, tried before in the same setting 550EX and Sigma 500DG super, im facing back the flash, when trigger 550EX only who fire, sigma doesn't.

Actually, I believe they are triggered by light falling onto the photocell on the strobes.

You mean your back is facing the flash??? Usually, have to twist the sensor to the back right???

yep, thats why i choose Canon flash over 3rd party flash, the angle rteciever is much much better.

actually, i believe i saw desmond from ST (or was that his name?) doing it at my camp last year. it's nothing new, really

AFAIK, canon uses infrared to transmit the remote triggering.
