Default Pictures taken with Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6

Would like to find out from the owners of the above lens (the $88 lens that came with the D70 promotion just before & during IT Show) whether the pictures taken are kinda blur? I know it is more prone to shake at the longer range, but I still get the perception that the photos taken are generally a bit OOF.

I seem to get better pictures using the kit lens.

What is your experience with this lens?

as a hobbyist i've been using the lens for 3 years and have no major grouses in terms of image quality (most of my prints are 4R size only), especially given the price. but if you're a pro or if you do larger prints then the lens of course might not be up to scratch.

proneness to shake will always be there for longer zooms, unless you're comparing it to VR. the kit lens is at a lower tele range and so shake is probably less of an issue. don't forget the kit lens also has ED elements, which the 70-300G does not. all other things being equal, one should expect the kit lens to give sharper images than the 70-300G.

I was reading that it might be made by sigma, yes the lens is not so sharp at the extended lengths especially compared the the 200mm nikkor. But for the price you really can't expect too much.

But if I do that in A mode, then it would be more prone to shake at longer zoom right? Guess you can't win them all

actually, i think the quality from cheap lenses are quite acceptable...

stopping down the lens 1-2 f-stops should reduce some softness from the long end.

well... you cant win all the time

actually the quality from cheap lenses is always acceptable...you only see the difference when you compare them with images with higher-end lenses! it is true that the cheaper lenses sometimes lose out on detail and sharpness.

think there was a recent thread comparing the difference between 70-300G and 70-300ED...if you look at the G image alone, it's pretty good, but if you compare side by side then the ED glass gives more detail, especially for blown up images.

having said that i'm very happy with my 70-300G as i'm on a tight budget!
