Default Get rid of lens fungus

Hi

Very upset,

Started to see some fungus growing in my tele lens.

Anyone know where I do have it clean at a reasonable price?

Help Help Help

the usual places. if under warranty, send to canon harbourfront. if no warranty, TCW or CamX at peninsular hotel.

Is it possible to DIY? Anyone has experience with it?

Btw, what is the rate TCW or CamX charges for their service?

Many thanks.

erm... not impossible... unless (a) u got the right tools, and (b) u got the necessary skills...

the rates they charge are dependent on the severity of the fungus/dust problem.

just wondering, should we keep the 'infected' lens separately? any impact to keep with the rest inside the same dry cabinet?

When I kept in the dry cabi, the RH is between 50 to 60%.

When I found out it was infected when I last kept in my bag for 3 weeks.

What is your RH% or any friend here could advice what is the appropriate setting please.

Not to mention the brand.

I have been using my dry box for almost 4 years and now it seem not be able to reach 50% even at the max setting with my current load.

Actually still under warranty and I have checked with the OEM. Was told that it normal I hope someone could advice me if you have faced the similar problem after extended usage of your dry box so that I can prove my case to "flip table" with the OEM.

Any advice please.

OMG , mine is set to RH:45% and can go as low as ~37% when set to max. A few CSers here recommended RH%:50 which I'm a little uncomfortable with.

What is the brand and model? can PM me? Just for reference only.

Take the unit to the shop and have the drier changed. It is not that expensive for the shop. They once told me it is less than $50 for non-pro drier. I do expect that they will change for you free as it is under warranty. But before that, do check that it is not working. Set it to the driest setting and let the unit run for a few hours without opening the door. There is no need to be angry, relax lah. Such stuff have mtf and your unit have been in use for 4 years.

Does this mean that when I visit Singapore, I need to get a dry box otherwise my lens will grow fungus?

not really ... if the lens and camera is used frequently .. no need for drybox ... just take care ... like wipe it down after each use ... keep the stuff clean ... obviously dun use liao keep in bag for a few weeks ... (use liao = moist due to sweat ... neck/shoulder strap also sweaty ... so bag very humid and nice home for fungus) ...

Singapore avg humidity is RH84% (see below), so it is your judgement call.

Default dry box - fungus

Will not matter if you visit and stay less than 2 weeks.

Dry box - set about 50% RH

Too dry-30% is no good. your lens lubrication will dry up, leather on camera bodies may crack up, your lens coating may be affected.

Too wet 80% RH - no good. might as well not have dry box.

All dry boxes have a product life.

Two of mine have failed.
I bought new ones.
Have enquired about just replacing the drying unit
Agent of one brand (also Japanese - NOT Toyo Living) very unwilling to help.
The reason is commercial.
If you just replace drying unit, then you will not buy a new dry cabinet
then they will not be able to sell the new dry cabinet to you
I bought 2 new dry cabinets (big size) but it is another brand Toyo Living from Cathay Photo, since the first brand agent was so unhelpful.
I was not in a bad mood so just let it go,
If I was, I would complain -- (NEVER to local agent -- they will laugh and throw your letter into waste basket) you will wait for months but no reply.
Complain ALWAYS to Japan (if product is made in Japan) - personally to the President of the company making the product; and register your mail
Only then you will get some action and reply
