Just bought a brand new Nikon D70 from Cathay Photo about 2 weeks back. Just ran the Opanda software today to see the shutter count. Imagine my surprise when I saw the shutter count was 600+, after deducting the shots I fired. Is it normal for a brand new set to have been used? Is there grounds for complain or ist just my luck?
![]() And there is dust on the inside of the kit lens. Now I have to take time off to go down Nikon for servicing. ![]() Last edited by b00boo; 10th May 2005 at 10:49 PM. Reason: Edited title |

Was the software released by Nikon? If not, how do you know for SURE it's 600 shutter count being fired?
The only MOST accurate way is to send in to Nikon to check. |

if really that matters to you, send back to nikon thailand to "zero" count on your body so that you will feel better.. I dont see the problem between "zero" or 600+. Are you going to curse yourself whenever you going to press on the shutter release button? ease up man.. Is your shoots counts, not the shutter counts.. Dust on lens is again, another norm, if you really particular bout dust on lens, the only thing you can do is to inspect before you buy off from the shop.. little bit of dust on lenses wont hurt you much on shooting.. above both qns had been asked in this forum many times, do a search, you will find more answers. hope its helps. ![]() |

Namely is
1) Dust is ever present in the areas of SG, you get them even if Nikon cleans every inch of the glass. Unless it affects the image, otherwise don't bother. 2) Shutter count is just a number, worrying about the shutter won't get you your image. Being so concious of the shutter will only make you lose shots. Think about it. |

Mine was zero count when I ran exif software on my D70, so I'm not sure if the checks Nikon do at the factory involve so many shutter counts.
As for being happy with the camera as long as it works, I suppose it's a personal preference. When you buy something new, you have every right to expect it to be new. Would you accept delivery of a "brand new" car which showed 600km on the odometer? Some would, some wouldn't, I guess it's up to the individual. My kit lens did have some dust in it though. I checked through a few sets at the shop, and they all had some dust particles, but not enough to affect image quality. |

Now if this was a brand new car...I would kick up a fuss with that 600km mileage! haha...esp since car costs so much more. Didnt see the dust inside of the lens until see the pic on the com...oh well...at least still under warranty...n heard servicing the lens is free! Now just have to find some time to go down... ![]() Last edited by b00boo; 10th May 2005 at 11:24 PM. |

I think it would take quite a big particle of dust for you to be able to see the effect on the picture. Even then, it would appear as a big shadowy cloud rather than anything that resembles a speck. Could it be that you have dust on the CCD instead that is affecting the picture?

![]() Hmmm.....u mean on the mirror inside the body? Coz now can see it when viewed through the viewfinder. But I tink its on the lens instead...coz jus took the lens to see...must see from angle then can see...very fine.... |

If it's that hard to see on the lens, very unlikely that it's big enough to affect picture. I'm guessing it's dust on the CCD (not the mirror). And maybe you also have dust in your viewfinder (also quite common).
To check CCD, use the mirror lock-up option (read the manual) and see if you can see any visible specks of dust or particles on the CCD (the greenish panel inside the cam). But if you're not familiar with the workings of the camera, then perhaps the safest solution is to pay a visit to Nikon service centre... |

forgot to add, DO NOT TOUCH THE CCD to try to remove dust or for any reason!
