Default Photo samples of 70-300G and 70-300mm ED lens

Hi,

Here's a photo sample of the 70-300mm G lens side by side the 70-300mm ED lens. A $300 vs $745 comparison of the image quality both offer. I believe the G lens came with some of the D70 during the fair right?

LEFT is G lens, RIGHT is ED lens.

There are a few more samples at the following website: http://www.walkinlight.com/web/70300/70300.htm

Have fun and comment

Like you said - you pay peanuts, you're gonna get monkeys

Ahh, but the question remains.... would you pay $300 more for the Nikkor?

Just to ask, were these shot wide open? If you can, try to reshoot these photos with f/8 or f/11.

I'm a satisfied user of the 70-300ED, and yes, there are it's faults as well (soft at 300mm, soft wide open), but hey, it's NOT that bad as it sounds out. Works wonders for me. At the ED's "sweet spot" (f/8 - f/11), it's comparable to the f/2.8 classes. Have never used the G version though.

But to be honest, the price difference between the G and ED versions don't warrant the additional cost. I got mine in HK for approx S$450 in Aug 03. If the ED version costs that much, I think you are better off getting a used 80-200 f/2.8 (I think it's selling for around that price).

the difference is there but i don't think i'd pay the extra $$$ for the ED version. for casual browsing, the G lens should suffice.

Looks like the ED is more than just marketing hype. There's a good reason for that price difference. Though I don't have both, this at least gives me confidence in the other Nikon lenses, and their touted features.

Well worth sharing! Thanks!

Tried the 70-300 ED at Changi Terminal 1 viewing area sometimes ago...found it a little bit soft...so crop and sharpen with PS...esp the last one at 300mm F8....can see the vignetting

Great work!! I was also considering either G or ED.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/70300g.htm

However are the results just as soft when not using at 300mm extreme?

I believe improvement in contrast is not due to the ED element, but to better coating. The ED element will improve the sharpness(resolution). So from these examples, we can deduce that there are other improvements to the lens other than just the ED element and the aperture ring. Moreover, it is difficult to believe that you can get such visible improvements from just a tiny ED element at the rear, and not the more important (and bigger) front elements.

i've always thought the ED element is to correct for the blue/red waves from distant objects to reach the sensor/flim at the same time therefore reducing chromatic abberations. at close range, does the ED really play a big effect?

below quote taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apochromatic
Quote:
Apochromatic is a description of a photographic or other lens having a high degree of color correction. Chromatic aberration is the phenomenon of different colors focusing at different distances from a lens (see the article for an excellent illustration). In photography, it leads to fuzzy images, and to color fringes at high-contrast edges, like an edge between black and white. Astronomers face similar problems, particularly with telescopes that use lenses rather than mirrors. General purpose photographic lenses are corrected to bring two of three primary colors into critical focus in the same plane. Apochromatic lenses are generally designed to bring all three Red/Blue/Green. Graphic Arts process (copy) cameras generally use APO lenses for this reason. Classically designed process or APO view camera lenses generally have a maximum aperture limited to F9. Recently high speed APO lenses have been produced for medium format, digital and 35mm cameras.

Optical engineers can design lenses that bring several colors to a focus at the same distance from the lens. Such lenses can be apochromatic, and can give sharper images than uncorrected optics. However, it requires extra pieces of glass in the optical path, and additional kinds of glass. This makes apochromatic lenses heavier and more expensive than their uncorrected counterparts.

If I remember correctly, you can take bus no. 24 right up to Changi Airport Bus Terminal, which is at the basement.
And from there just go up to the 3rd level, the viewing gallery.
It's open 24/7.
1st level is Arrival Hall, 2nd level is Departure Hall.
