Default D2x Lock Up

One user in USA has experience his D2x lock up and the Service Centre got no idea what is wrong.

If you are going for an important shoot, better bring one backup body.

See below:

"I talked to a couple of folks at Nikon today & none of them have heard of
the problem u've encountered.

Speculation is that the camera is a computer & computers hick-cup from time
to time. U did the right thing but there is probably no point in sending it
in for a repair at this time because if they can't replicate the problem
they will just send it back to u...a general waste of time.

I guess u should hope for either no further problems or catastrophic
failure.

So.................... Good luck !

James, thanks for sharing this info.

Someone mentioned to me that we should look at a DSLR as a computer, not a camera. If your computer can hang up once in a while so will your DSLR. When they hang up, we just re-boot, or in the case of the poor guy you mentioned, he just removes and re-insert the battery to get it working again. And, luckily, like a computer, you may be able to do a software(firmware) patch to fix the particular problem in the near future, hopefully soon.

I agree with your advice that a backup body is a good and wise practice for professionals in the field.

aything that is electronic is prone to such issues. the more compact the circuitry the more likely such things will happen. even handphones are known to hang from time to time. with everything so tightly pack together all you need is a drop of water to condense on some parts and is enough to short it until the drop dries up

so what do you suggest? acccept the failure or change to another more reliable brand?

Well... unless you have a lot of money, then we can all go over to the C brand. But more often than not, it is better to accept the failure and work round the problem than spending money unnecessarily.

Go over? Are they immune to such things? I thought the whole plethora of patches for the cameras' firmware including one that rendered it dead show more danger, rather than less...

you're definitely free to change. and then change again and again until there are no more "reliable" brands.

any suggestion? more reliable doesn't mean 100% perfect, so still no point changing.

That is my point. Just because of this one system failure people are unhappy with the item that they have purchased and want to try another brand.

This thing almost happened in DPreview a number of times when some users found the RAW file processing so labourous that they almost went over to the other boat.
