What will you be shooting ?
I found the MF 600 AI I have is quite easy to use and very sharp for wildlife use.
With not so heavy weight [2.7kg] its still a portable lens.
+ its cheap now.

My intend of specialisation will be typically wildlife.

i dunno if the AI lens will support matrix or spot metering too.

u mentioned that its cheap, what is the current market price for a 2nd or 3rd hand ones ?

i am not critical on the exterior cosmetics as eventually the entire lens will be gaffered up too.... lol...

what is impt is the sharpness and bokeh..

If you have D1/D2 family, you can do CWA and spot metering. Even heard that D2x can do Matrix on AI/s lens.

Or if you use Canon DSLR .. they can meter using Nikon AI/s glass

AIs 600 /5.6 is priced around USD 1500-2000 last time I check. in eBay.com got one Brand new old stock went upto USD 2000 this morning.

In Sydney, there is one 2nd hand shop that has a AF 300 /2.8 for AUD 1500 a while back , so with a 2x TC .. it will cost around AUD 2000.

1 AUD == 1.2 SGD == 0.75 USD

so the 600mm f/5.6 is around 3k SGD in the states. while the 300mm f/2.8 is 1.8K aus...

with TC on, it will be 600 f/5.6... hmmm.... cost around 2.5k for a 600mm f/5.6 setup .... hmm...
