Default Lens Query

Was thinking of selling my D70 kit lens and buy another lens to replace it.
I defintely cant afford the Nikkor Trinity lens

Was thinking of a range probably 1x - 1xx mm f/2.8
Good for street shoot and portraiture if got macro better ..
not too plastic feel , fast focus , Brand new less than $SG800

I will be shooting more on portraits. Ani comments ?

the 28-75/2.8 is probably the closest you can get to that range. tamron has one for aabout 600 bucks and it has a macro function as well. great for street and portraits.

there's also the Sigma 18-50mm/f2.8 DC lens which would provide wide angle capabilities. but the original kit lens is quite good, so there's no real need to replace it.

I 2nd that. the D70 kit lens looks cheap .. but they are par with the 17-35 trinity imo. Stop them at f/8 .. and they both shine.
unless you want to shot on dim light .. then the kit lens is no go

With range covering 18-70 DX [28-105 equiv in 135] is a walk around lens you'll need.
And macro wise is good too [unless you want to see ant's eyes on your screen .. then you need the reversed 50mm ]

WOW!!! I didn't know the 17-35 can be compared with 18-70 And somemore on PAR with the 17-35 Wow. Seems like paying 3K for the 17-35 is being stupid when the $400 18-70DX is the same!!

why no go? if a 2.8 lens gives you 1/40s shutter speed, the D70 wide open at 18mm will give you 1/30s or so (less than 1 stop difference), still doable.

@ 18mm the kit lens is too soft
I found it really good at around 21mm above.
and at 21mm .. I think it stop down to a max of f/3.8 ?

+ i am not that healthy to shot at slower than 1/40"
my dad otoh can handheld a F90 + 80-200 /2.8 @ 1/30" and still comes out very sharp
maybe i need to follow his daily jogging routine

May I know what contribute to a good len?
What is/are the criteria of being consider a good len?
Does it mean a fast len is a good len?
I do believe that it is more than this.
why don't you think it over and comment again on what you have said.

Don't think you can find a 1x-1xx f2.8 lens with your spec below $800. If you happen to find it please do let us know. The kit lens is one of the best value for money lens you can get.
