But that person stopped putting his slippers on the seat. Both were young, say about 16 to 20 years old. This incident happened at 1.43pm on 9 Oct 2012.

I don't think the young foreign Indian was intentionally being selfish.
It was a cultural divide. Maybe they do things that way in India. It is the norm there.
But not acceptable here in Singapore.
maybe it's time i told those local chinese/malay/indian aunties and uncles not to let their kids dance on the seats in their shoes.

it's just not part of our culture

    There is one more aspect.

    DON'T do this in Thailand.

You have to understand the culture of the country. If you put up your feet and sandals/shoes on the seat in this unusual way and point them towards other passengers sitting across the aisle of the bus, it is considered an insult in Thailand.

If what the lady reportedly said is true, it should always be others respecting her culture and rights, never the other way around.

She would not want to experience what an enraged Thai would do to her, especially if they are a bit high on alcohol.

This has nothing to do with Thailand. Do this in Germany and you might get a whack right away. It's global courtesy not to place dirty feet / shows on the seats.

whacking someone for poor manners is not xenophobic.

and you have to understand that Singaporeans generally have a distaste for foreigners.

you can say that we're in many ways similar to the Australians; our xenophobia is hidden

Had the exact same experience at Food Republic WISMA.
Was dinner time, me and my friend were having a hard time finding seats.
Came across a table for four seats occupied by 2 ladies (mid 20s corporate type) and the other 2 chairs they used it for their shopping bags.
I walked towards them and politely asked them if we can have the 2 empty seats.
Guess what one of the lady said? THOSE 2 SEATS ARE FOR OUR BAGS!
I simply couldn't believe my ears. I gave a very disgusted look and stared at the lady who proceed to have her dinner like she owns the place.
I didn't want to argue with her and just walked away.
But till this day I cant forget this incident and at times I wished I had 'thrashed' that bia-tch for being so selfish and inconsiderate.

It has nothing to do with foreign land or cultures. It is just simply bad manners. And it is not the culture in Australia to do that. If she does that on a crowded bus in Australia, she will get an earful.

I'm not a true born Singaporean, but I love Singapore when I came here as a tourist decades ago. I can swear that circa 1995, Singaporean does not have any distaste for foreigners.

I can tell you I fell head over heels for the livelihood here at that time.
