Default Which Prime lens for D7D?

Hi Guys,

Few of my friends in Canon and Nikon Camps have bought their prime lens. Namely in 50mm Class. May I ask what's best (you think) in our catalogue in your opinion?

IMHO.. its depends what type of prime you need.. WA, standard, tele etc. A best prime is useless if it doesn't fit your exact needs.. it can't ZOOM!

Hi Deslim27,

I know prime cannot zoom but does Tamron SP 90mm F2.8 macro consider a prime too? Would really like to get this because of very postive reviews and picture quality i saw.

Any lens which cannot zoom and has a fixed focal lens is a prime lens. It is just a naming convention. Yes the Tamron SP 90mm f2.8 is a good lens. Used to have it, now a bit regret that I have sold it.

if you're getting this lens for macro, its a good lens, but if you intend to use it for portrait or non-macro shoots, i suggest that you give this a miss and buy a normal prime like the Minolta 100mm f/2.8.

Primes comes in many focal lenght and max aperture. What to buy depends
on your usage / type photography. For beginning you can start with the popular "standard" lens 50m F1.7. 50mm gives you same magnification
level (for Full frame) as seen with eye.

the Tamron 90mm macro would be good for portrait or non-macro shots as well.... unless you need fast focussing.

Hi Caussway,

May I ask what u mean by full frame? You mean the angle your eyes see is almost the same coverage as same as the 50mm Lens??

How come my friend say crop factor is not into prime lens especially those with APS lens.. Is it true? Thanks..

Crop factor always applies as long as long your sensor smaller
than full frame ( 36 x 24mm ) regardless of prime or zoom.

Yes 50mm gives you the same angle of view covered as eye when mounted on a 35mm film camera (or FF DSLR). But when 50mm lens when mounted on D7D gives you the same field of view as you would get with a (50x1.5) = 75mm lens on a 35mm film body.

Of course, I'm sure you know a prime cannot zoom. My point is the choice of focal lenght, some find 35 useless and 50 useful, some think otherwise . Some find 17 too wide, some love it..

just ordered the sigma 20mm f1.8 prime from MScolor. I am going for tour next month so hopefully it will be useful for landscape and indoor (museum) shots without flash.

Thus bringing my 20mm f1.8 and 28-75mm f2.8 along. Hopefully they are enough.

how much u get for 20mm f1.8? My friend last two weeks ago went to MS color and was advised against getting 7D by them. Reasons being were the lens were difficult to get and very limited. I lent my friend to play with my 7D other night and to know that after this incident, he decided to look at Canon 350D instead. So sad...

majere2sg, very nice photos.. Hope I am making the right choice.. Btw your skills is not poor, mine is worst!

How abt APS lens?? I heard the lens designed is catered for small sensor so that the image will fall exactly at the sensor point. In that case will Crop multipler applies here?
