Default make "how to select tripod and tripod head" a sticky

many newbie had ask for advice for a/m, how about having it as a sticky, save them from having to search for history thread, or posting it again and again by different newbie, then there will be people like us advicing them to do a search in cs. pls correct or add in more selection criterial should you have one.

Points to consider when selecting tripod

1) $$ budget.
2) height of user.
3) weight of eqpt (remember to cater for future expension).
4) weight / mat'l of tripod
4.1) normal = aluminium = $
4.2) lighter = carbon fiber = $$$
5) types of photogaphy
5.1) tripod c/w linkage from centre column to individual leg = $
5.2) tripod w/o the linkage, all 3 legs can be set to horizontal orientation for low angle shots = $$
5.3) specialize tripod like "unilock" which is most flexible and fastest to deploy for all the odd angle shots = $$$

Point to consider when selecting a tripod head

1) $$ budget
2) weight of the head, lighter = $$$
3) weight of eqpt (remember to cater for future expension)
4) type of pjotography
4.1) needs fast action to track the subject, low load bearing = "pistol grip ball head"
4.2) needs fast action to track the subject, high load bearing = "ball head"
4.3) needs fast action to track the subject with long tele lens, high load bearing = "wimberly head"
4.4) needs precise adjustment, preferrably 1 plane at a time = "3 way pan head"
4.5) needs very precise adjustment, minute adjustment to 1 plane at a time, high load bearing = "3 way pan gear head"

I would also like to put in the general $$ of the more recommended tripod and tripod head (new, not used item), but no idea cause have not been looking into this items. pls contribute info

general cost of tripod

aluminium mat'l
1) manfrotto 190series =

You guys might want to check out this taiwan made carbon fibre tripods, Feisol.
The price is almost half of carbon fibre from manfrotto or gitzo.
There's a lot of good reviews on the tripod from dpreview forum.

can chip in abit...

for budget ballheads... can try the GIOTTOS MH-1000. it costs abt $150. can support my D70+SB800+70-200(HSM)

for <1.7m can get the Manfrotto 190 or SLIK 500DX
for >1.7m can get the Manfortto 055 or SLIK 700DX

SLIK 500DX is $150 with a pan tilt. i am 1.74m. need to bend a little.

I'm about 1.83m, using manfrotto 055 proB ($180, brand new) and 322RC2 grip head ($160+). Very stable, no need to bend so much. Can't remember the weight, but I think about 2.5kg in total?
