Hi people,
I am selling of my D70 to buy a new DSLR. Thinking of getting the 7d. A couple of questions, 1) from a couple of reviews, they say the anti shake is less effective at tele. Lets say at 200mm, can you shoot 2 stops slower? I know it is hard to quantify the effects of anti shake but just want to get some opinons. 2) where is the best place to find minolta lens in stock. I have a pretty good price on the body from MScolor but they don't seem to carry any lens dunno what I am going to do with the body without lens... Any suggestion for what lens? Thinking of getting the 18-200mm from Tamron. dunno where have stock. Also the 50mm f1.7. MScolor quote me $250 but no stock as usual... 3) is the LCD screen of the 7D good enough to check sharpness? The 350D can zoom in 10x during playback. The 7D only only 4.7x but has a large LCD. |

Hi,
1) AS/IS/VR whatever you call it and how many stops lower you can achieve greatly depends on how firm and steady your hands are. This is a very independent answer which the result varies greatly again on the hands of the photographer. The longer the focal length, the same amount of shaking gives a totally different result at different focal length. I hope you understand what I am trying to tell you. Techincally, 2-stops lower is possible and had been proven. 2) Minolta lenses are rare and very hard to find and most of them needs to pre-order. The other option is to order online. The Tamron 18-200 looks good and what more to ask for an award winner? But, KM will be releasing its version of 18-200 as well, so you might consider waiting a little longer. Not sure about the 50 f/1.7, but I remember someone selling it 2nd in Bull & Sell forum. Maybe do a search or you may want to post a WTB thread. 3) So far, I find that the LCD is good enough to see if a photo is sharp. No complains. ![]() More enquires, you're welcome to join us tomorrow at our monthly gathering. ![]() Last edited by Drudkh; 4th May 2005 at 03:12 PM. |

mscolor only have the sigma 28-200 and km 28-75 f2.8.
Should I get the KM 28-75 f2.8? hard to find reviews on minolta lens. Any good websites to recommend? |

Yes u should get the 28-75mm if u dun mind that the lens effectively is 42mm at the wide end... it's a good lens... consider also the KM 17-35mm lens if u want wide end... the 50mm is much cheaper 2nd hand... if u can find it... u want lens review, try the Minolta SLR forum at Dpreview.... I think the users have lots of links. I can't think of any offhand but I have read some....

tmr cannot as I am meeting my wedding photographer to choose photos
but if I buy today, will try to go down and meet you guys.thanks for the replies. I read from dpreview, that 7d darkframe technology replaces hot pixels with black dots... is this fixed? my old D70 uses the nearby pixels to interpolate a color so you do not get black dots. I really want to get a lens that start at 18mm. AP has one 18-125mm sigma available but selling for $550. The canon mount is only $480 at mscolor ![]() |

Hi,
If you're going for the sigma 18-125, might as well wait a little longer and go for the Tamron/KM 18-200. I've seen comparisons where the 18-200 wins. Take a look here. As for the AS, I'd would say it has taken most of my anxiety off during night casual shoots. |

ya,
I like to try new stuff. will try to drop by tmr but dunno if got time. Anyway got a short question regarding hot pixel. I have a red hot pixel at the bottom of the picture which appears even in ISO100 for shutter speeds slower than 1/5. For ISO800 it is obvious for shutter speeds 1/10 and slower.... other than that it is perfectly fine. Should I get it changed? Did I get an above average set or a below average set? Actually the dot is not very irritating and it is easily removed by PS using despeckle filter. |

the anti shake is really good. I can get some decent pics at 1/10 shutter even at 75mm!! Last time with D70 IMPOSSIBLE. In fact even 1/50 also quite difficult
as my hands not very steady. It seems that image stabilization helps the "shaky" people more ![]() |

why? Is a perfect set common? ie zero hot pixel at ISO800, f2.8, shutter 1/2, shot with the lens cap on. I scared change already get some other more serious problem. Minolta should be able to map out the hot pixel right? |

mine have no hot pixels even at ISO3200, 1 sec shutter, other than noise.

The worst case is 0.8 sec shutter time. Try 0.8 sec shutter and ISO3200. |
