Hi
Any body uses M42 lens with adaptor on your AF camera? I just got one to play with, but the pin to close down the aperture doesn't seem to serve its purpose. *just based on observation* I haven't run through any film through it yet though. My question is: Whether the ring on the body to close down the aperture on lens while taking picture, can manage to push the pin on the M42 lens? Thanks. |

Depending on which M42 lens you use. In pre-set lenses, you need to turn the stopdown ring to set aperture to the pre-set value. These are actually the most straightforward for non-m42 SLR use.
In some you need to switch the lens from "auto " to "manual", and then vary the aperture. In some, you use the DOF preview button to stop down to currently set value and hold it down. If you are using a lens which is only automatic diaphram without auto/man switch and DOF switch (e.g. zenitar 16/2.8), you will need to get an adaptor with a "ridge"... basically an extra lip in the adapter which stops down the aperture as the lens is screwed into the adapter. |

wow.. thnx -7- and keltzar for the quick reply..
I spent like 2-3 minutes pondering Keltzar's reply. My lens is the Zenitar 16mm/2.8 fisheye lens. The DOF switch on my D7 doesn't interact with the aperture pin on the lens. I have presently a M42/AF adaptor. if use the additional adaptor with ridge, is it the same function if I just somehow glue or fixed the pin down? |

i was down at the Hospital to send in another lens for cleaning, so brought my M42 along. The fella there explained to me that supposedly the adaptor is to hold the pin down, but the adaptor which i bought wasn't the one. So he going to mod the lens such that the aperture closes down when i turn the aperture ring.

yes, that is basically correct. From the time I first bought the zenitar in 1996 till 2004, I basically pushed in the aperture pin and jammed it in with a jeweller's screwdriver. All his mod will involve is doing that. Or else he will open up the back flange and disengage the pin (bad idea, because then if he doesn't give you a pin back you will never be able to restore it to the original condition).
When someone finally made an adapter with a ridge, I bought one... reversed the mod I had done 8 years earlier... and screwed the lens into the adapter. So now all is well and it works as an auto-aperture lens if I require it to. That said, i did all this on EOS. If they don't make such an adapter for minolta AF, you could do the mod yourself by jamming it in. You can ask Parlin , since he also uses minolta AF. He may know. |
