i ask the lady before passing her the cd rom for printing. she inserted the cd into the pc terminal, then all my pics were displayed...
she even showed the area of the pics if i wanted 3:2...
so i told her i dont want it to be cropped. paid extra for white border...
Yours is the one opp Watson?
I am going to try some prints... Don't have to crop no more! Yippee.

tried another one at parkway last nite.
the konica one, adjacent to watsons.
the machine they encourage ppl to make use of is not very user friendly.
cant make adjustments, cant crop and cant have a mix of different sizes of pics...

the one at suntec basement is much more flexible, in the sense that it allows you to crop the pics yourself, add words, frames, even resize 4 pics into 1 4R without extra charge! and the prints came out pretty well, i might add...and cheap!

Set resolution for both 4R and 5R to 300dpi. I think you're good to go with that setting. Hopes this helps.

Zul, thanks. Is 300dpi the standard for print? What happens if I were to print at 360dpi? Does it means better quality?

Well, that is what I've been told by KT Photo along Upper Cross Street. They print on good quality paper.

I do not think there is any harm to save it at higher resolution just note the sizes and the minimum resolution for good quality print is minimum at 300dpi.

Oh, if you set your own border please be sure to tell the printer that also.

Codling, sorry huh i am a bit slow... so if u have a 4:3 picture... and u go to for digital prints, the photos in 4R will be in 4:3 ratio but with white borders on top and bottom if it is in landscape mode issit...?? Do we have to pay extra to request them to print 4:3

Traditional one is to crop 3:2 but is there a minium resolution so that the photos will turn out good...?

    so the dimensions for 4RDigital (4:3 ratio) is 6" x 4.5" Vs 4R (3:2) 6" x 4"
when u just tell the shop you want to print in 4R, most shops will just assume that you want them in traditional 3:2 format and auto crop of the top and bottom, assuming your pic is in landscape.
most digital labs will not charge for 4:3 printing. at least the 2 that i went to at parkway basement doesnt. but the standard photo lab (opp watson) do charge extra for printing white borders all round. the konica lab (adjacent to watsons) i m not too sure, they do have those self service terminals but in my hurry to use one the last time, i did not see any option to print in 4RD...anyway, didnt like their printout...

yes, there is a minimum resolution. to play safe, you need a minimum of 300DPI
you can do a bit of calculation for minimum resolution...

    12R - 12" x 18" or 3600x5400
    S10R - 10" x 15" or 3000x4500
    10R - 10" x 12" or 3000x3600
    S8R - 8" x 12" or 2400x3600
    8R - 8" x 10" or 2400x3000
    6R - 6" x 8" or 1800x2400
    5R - 5" x 7" or 1500x2100
    4R - 6" x 4" or 1800x1200
    3R - 5" x 3.5" or 1500x1050
calculated based on 300dpi for optimum printing.
    3:2 aspect ratio

    example
    4R = 6" x 4" (1800 x 1200) minimum resolution
    4R = (6" x 300dpi) x (4" x 300dpi)
    4R = 1800 x 1200 pixels.

    for 4RDigital
    6" x 4.5"
    1800 x 1350

but of course, if you are printing in 4RD, then you do not need to do this calculation, just make sure you preserve the aspect ratio when you are resizing.

hope i dont confuse ppl here...

Oh i see... so if u request for 4RD... it is actually a bigger piece than traditional 4R or the paper size is still the same but they squeeze the picture into that piece of paper...?

Just wan to clearify some stuff... sorry for being very slow in understanding...

if you request for 4RD, it'll be 0.5" more in terms of the height...
    remember, 4R using 4:3 ratio is 6" x 4.5" Vs 3:2 ratio 6" x 4"
that means that 4RD pics wont fit normal foto albums...
paper size will definitely be bigger, probably thats why they assume you want it in 3:2 aspect, ahhaha...they save more paper...dont quote me...

    Okie one last question...

If u resize image in PS

    there will be 2 box...

    1) Pixel dimension

    2) Document Size

When u decide to do prints, issit a must to change the document size / resolution from 72 dpi to 300 dpi? or we just need to keep the dimensions ratio, and the lab prints pple will do it for us.

    To simplify the question.

Can i just change the dimension of the picture to 1800 x 1200, yet the in the document size, the resolution is 72 dpi. Then i request to print in 4R. Will this turn out right if i leave the resolution in 72?

    Full of questions today...

Why today full of qns on printing huh?

I think pic resolution at 72dpi is different from print resolution at 300dpi hor!

but by default the picture come out from the camera is at 72 dpi mahz...

    So let say...

    Picture 1
    Dimension: 1800 x 1200
    Dpi setting: 72
    Request to print at 4R

    Picture 2
    Dimension: 1800 x 1200
    Dpi setting: 300
    Request to print at 4R

Any difference between picture 1 and picture 2...?

So when i am saving the file if i change the DPI from 72 to 300 before i send to prints
does it makes a difference if originally it is 72 and both the dimensions in pixel are the same.

    Cheers...
