Question Shooting In Darkness

Well you know in the dark in manual mode, there are many times you can't see anything so you have to swap between P to see what you are taking and change back to M to take the shot. This is ok when taking landscape, but when you want to take shots of people with the flash it gets irritating, very hard to frame it up when all you see is darkness. Anybody found their solution to the problem?

Bring a torchlight, to light up the face, then focus and shoot with other hand. When you use flash, the flash will fill in and remove the low intensity torchlights.
