From the trailer only (have not watched it yet), seems depressing and negative to me - with a hint of bullying.

By the way, cluedos to the director. It may very well deserve the award, but these are just the impressions I got from the trailer.

I am not a director or even in the movie business so no idea what it should be filled with. Just my personal impression as a viewer of the trailer.

Very well done. It is a good start for Singaporean film makers.
Some credit to his predecessors Eric Khoo and Royston Tan for blazing the trail.
Whether a film wins awards depends on how the judges perceive it. In this case, it ticked all the right boxes.

It's Cannes. If the film doesn't make you feel sad or suicidal, it wouldn't have won.

I think you meant "kudos" instead of "cluedos"

The latter "Cluedo" is a murder mystery deduction board game we used to play as kids.

    Hearsay:
Ilo Ilo, which just won Singapore's first Cannes award, was rejected funding by at least 15 *** MPs and MICA.

    anyone can verify?

Well, it's great that Singapore gets some international recognition... cos the person handling the Cannes filmfest website probably doesn't know before.....

Below is a screen capture I did early afternoon....

    It has since been corrected

Some in US and Europe mistake Singapore to be a city in China.

    Awesome achievement!

Pity the cast/crew aren't properly credited in the listing.

    A short from last year:

I note that Publichouse.sg and many other sites took this up quickly as a jiffy.

Sad that not many people in alternative media bother to do a quick Google before posting it up. And then just as quickly took it down once others who bothered to Googled pointed out the link below. Who watches the watchers?

    in-the-news

Award-winning filmmaker, Anthony Chen has been given funding by the Singapore Film Commission for his first feature film entitled “Ilo Ilo”. The film is set in mid 1990s in Singapore, and chronicles the relationship between three young brothers and their maid from Iloilo, a province in Philippines. All his short films have received international attention. Most notably, his second short film, "Ah Ma (Grandma)", was nominated for the Palme d’Or for Short Film at the 60th Cannes Film Festival, and received a Special Mention, a first for a Singapore filmmaker.

The SFC is a part of MDA. Find out more about MDA’s grant schemes that support film-making at www.mda.gov.sg/Schemes/Pages/GrantSchemes.aspx.
FYI, Anthony Chen did his Masters with a MDA scholarship. See 2009 link.

He is currently pursuing a Masters in Film Directing at the National Film and Television School, UK supported by a scholarship from the Media Development Authority, Singapore.

in my opinion the agencies did the right thing by rejecting it. if they had done the funding, netizens would have been quick to condemn them for supporting the Foreigners, and deem the film as propaganda.

if they hadn't, well, this is still the same negative outcome, but not as bad.

Yeah i did. I know MDA funded it

What i should have been more clear about was to explain why certain government agencies reject funding, because the concept has no link to that agency, or that they do not have any program in place for it.

And also that MDA and its related agencies would have been the better go-to source for funding for such activities because they're related to what MDA is doing
