Probably dedication to his job, but to me this is way overkill.

I know about the trick "overpowering the sun", but our sun hasn't gone supernova yet.

one question. how the hell does he trigger the flashes?

I don't own a YN but they got commander mode or optical slave?

I guess he is doing this for fun, like a walking christmas tree.
Anyway, you can tell how the lights being deploy does not make any sense.

...then he posts his shots on CS and they're stunning, and everyone asks him what his lighting setup is... LOL

no commander mode but just optical slave.

optical slave S1 mode, fire instandly after trigger by another flash,

optical slave S2 mode, fire with slight delay to ignore pre flash by another flash,

This is not a lighting setup. Its a defensive gear to blind other photographer around him.

the lighting set up does not make any sense,

why need flash mounted on hotshoe if he already using a ring flash?

and the off camera flash aiming all over the place, whoever standing beside him shooting will be very suay.

He won't have hairs on his back and backside.

The radiation from strobe guarantees that.
