I would go for the 1.4 instead. Costs about $450. Brighter lens, better construction. If you are shooting a lot it is better to get a more durable lens. I got a 24mm f2.8 instead. With a 35mm film perspective, its my so called normal lens.
The 50mm would be suitable for portraits. But there are lots of candidates for portrait lens in medium telephoto range. The 50mm is your low light portrait lens. But why would you be shooting lots of portraits in low light? Again the 24mm or 28 mm lens can be used (at higher ISO) as you can include surrounding background. If you are really into low light photography then why compromise at f1.8. People are using the 50mm for macro but the reversing ring is not cheap. You can get always the AIS 55mm macro or a proper >100mm macro lens. Again many are finding macro photography too challenging for casual snapshots. So you can buy macro lens cheap in buy and sell too. Maybe that is why you see a lot of 50mm 1.8 for sale there A camera body can fit one lens at a time and the 50mm is always the second choice somehow.
