Thread: Photography School

    Default Photography School

    Hi everyone,

I have an interest in photography and would like to take it to another step. I've Google "photography schools in Singapore" and resulted in a few answers.

    1. SOP
    2. Phocus
    3. Nafa

Was wondering could we do studies on photography through this links and prolly get a cert or something familiar?
or are there any other schools recommended?

    Thanks!

The cert means nothing in this business. May I ask, why do you seem to be keen on having a cert?

Initially thought that you need a cert to work with a photography company. Thanks for pointing it out for me.

Experiences is more important than cert.

However, if you want to work in Magazine like National Geographic, you need to be good at writing too.

A friend of mine said he was rejected because his English writing skills is not good.

you can go and study it if you able to, is helping you to build a good foundation anyway.

but the cert is only telling people you have studied and passed all these subjects, does not mean anything other than these,

the portfolio is able to tell people what you are capable to produce.

    hope this help.

no one ask me for cert. they only ask to see my photos.

if need cert only, everyone with a dslr can be a pro photog and do weddings etc etc.

oh. they are ... without a cert even.

A cert will help if you want to be an accountant, etc. But photography is an art. A cert in photography is great to use as toilet paper, because what you really need is the artistic and creative vision. No cert can teach you this. You either have it and can be a photographer, or don't have it and just be one of thousands of "guy with camera" we have in singapore.

Don't get suckered in by those "schools" offering certs - they're just milking the cash cow called "singapore kiasuism".

The cert you get when you graduate is useless. Get out of Singapore if you want to study art. Art is too limited in Singapore that you can't express it freely.

Going to an art school is mostly to get connections as well as dedicating time to build your portfolio. There's just that much you can learn technical-wise but conceptial-wise, it's endless.

    look at it this way,
if you have zero acknowledge about photography, you go to schools will give you a solid foundation on what you need to know to begin with,
but if you are already a competent photographer, you don't need a cert, your portfolio is vital and more useful.
and if you want to go further in your career, get certified by the professional photographers associations you join.

    hope this help.

Thanks for the advices. Yes I do agree that art in Singapore is rather limited. Shall look into producing my own portfolio.

I attended some photography courses in these schools. Some are quite good both for beginners to learn as well as for advance users to reaffirm what they already know. So don't write them off. They are more specific in their delivery. So for example you want to know more about studio lightings, then you sign up for the relevant one. It does point you in the right direction.

There is the affordable Safra photographic club which was not mentioned. Though I agree that the certs probably counts for little unless you are short of certs to hang on the wall.

In photography, your photos are your certs

    Good photos = good certs

Singapore is not the place to learn photography. look at them. most of them own the expensive camera.
but could not compete with oversea.

sorry not true... Singapore has produced its fair share of noted photographers ... just that many of them are humble and not publicity seeking

A few of them even died while on assignment so please do not insult them with your statement

Schools are just a DIFFERENT way of learning at a different pace. Some prefer it this way.

Can or cannot shoot is one thing but certs/diplomas/degrees do act as credentials... in fact they put the guy under EVEN MORE pressure to deliver

Could be, but aren't you curious what we might "miss out"?

Of course they have, but we would be too far and their "lights" are too dim for us to know.
