Question Canon Zoom EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L IS USM

Hi, to all the great guys out there with high-end lenses

Can you advise as to how you will rate the EF 28-300mm.

How about the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM
and the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM?

Are there someone or shops that sells the above used lenes?

How well these lenses perform with digital cameras?

Your expert advice will be greatly appreciated.

Default Fred Miranda

1st stop for such issues should be Fred Miranda's site.

Thanks r52lanc.

Been to these reviews. Only problem is that there is no close comparison between these zoom lenses. Perhaps the push/pull zoom is an "issue"? I have used older push/pull lenses of other makes and it will be more troublesome with heavier lenses.

Any recommendation as to where to buy, new and or used?

You might wanna look at www.luminous-landscape.com because there's a review of the lens here. I think the lens is compared to other lenses too.

Hope it helps.

the 70-200 would of course be better than the 28-300 in many ways. the 28-300 is heavy, variable appeture, push pull zoom, and very expensive too

Default Aperture

I do alot of event photography. I want good bokeh.... to get it with a telephoto lens, you need to be around f2.8 - f3.8. I won't buy a slow telephoto lens for this reason. You can make the same case for bird photography. For f4.5 and up... just forget it.

I own a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM... it is by far my favorite lens. A bit short for bird photography.... but a perfect event lens. Here is an example of a photo taken at f3.2 ....... butter smooth bokeh. Ahhhhhhhhh!

Student...
Low $ try save up for the 70-200F/4 L.
NEW S$1400.
2nd hand S$950
Taking sport need F/2.8 for fast speed.
If you don't take sport F/4 is very good already.

*Cough... cough... cough...*

This is a hell lotta cash (and weight!) for a f/2.8 lens. Think wisely before making da investment. Sit down and think if u'll need that extra 1 stop of light before deciding between f/2.8 and f/4.

If u got moola I'm not stopping u. Go get da best.

I think the best bet will be the Sigma 70-200EX f/2.8. Approx 1k new. Im getting either that or the f/4L when I got enough dough..

While the Sigma one is good, for those who are on a really tight budget can consider a Tokina 80-200 F2.8. Very good and sharp lens.

I tried the tokina, built like a tank, but the focusing is very slow.

Thanks for the $ound advice. However, is f/2.8 and f/4 just one stop apart? I think taking indooor shots of event, especially sports, would make a quite a difference between these 2 f-stops (flash not permitted).

Where can I see or read about the Sigma 70-200EX f/2.8 and the Tokina 80-200 f/2.8? No such thing as IS with this I supposed?

Coming from the crazy group of shooters from the sentosa thread. What i can advise you is to save up for the 2.6k lens.

I've tried it on a 10D and IT IS FAST. It tracks and locks almost effortlessly. Now i know why those who have this lens, vouch and swear by it. Getting all the moment.

IS comes in handy when you need it the most. Otherwise, be prepared to lug a mono/tripod.

The Tokina is quite noisy for the focusing mechanism. rainman can vouch for that.

HSM vs USM ... its a neverending debate. But read that HSM is 20% slower than USM.

If you're interested in the Sigma. You can PM garion for some test shots. I can't seem to find his review thread though.

Thanks dEthANGel.

I am quite convienced to get the f/2.8 L IS except for the objection from my pocket. I will save up for it.

By the way, any one out there is willing to sell such a lense?
