Default Indoor events, what are the most common ranges used?

ie: for company ad&d etc..

I'm going to cover a company event, I'm planning to bring 10-22 (at the 22 end to shoot group), 50mm and 100mm..

of course, I do have my 50-500 which covers the whole range, but that's over kill and way too intimidating.

so which do you think is an appropiate lens for indoor events nowadays?

17-85
28-135
18-200
28-300

I think for indoors, a 17-40 fits the job most
The bigma is really an overkill and 10-22 is too wide most of the time.

17-40 F4L~ more then sufficient for indoor photography...got money then go for the 16-35 F2.8L.

i personally use the 17-40 f4L tagged with 70-200 F4L. but 17-40 stays on my 20D 90% of the time.

flash or no-flash environment? if no-flash environment, think the lenses u have in mind might have a problem.

10-22 on a DSLR shld be enuf for most grp pic. if u have a mid-tele like a 24-70mm for covering any event on stage, dat would be good. i found dat lenses above 70mm (like 70-200mm) might be an overkill especially if the room is small. if its a big ballroom/hall, the 70-200mm might be useful for the occasional candid shot.

based on the above choices, i would go with 17-85.
the range is enuf to cover table/group shots to stage performances.
leave anything above 70mm at home.

17-85 would be good enough. for me, I'll probably use the 18-125 from Sigma (with the 10-22 or WCON08B if I need the wide angle).

I just covered an event with 2 primes - Sigma 20mm f1.8 and Canon 85mm f1.8. No flash needed (although if I needed to do group shots I would stop down the 20mm and use flash), very good ambience. Anything in between I zoom with my feet. Worked very well for me.

yeah i second the sigma 20mm/f1.8. f1.8 is very, very useful for lowlight even with flash; you can then do nice slow-sync and rear-curtain sync flash effects with nice ambient lighting.

Hmm.... I took several nice group shots at my last office D&D covering the event with 18-55mm EF-S lens.

In this case, 17-40 or 18-55 will do da trick. 18-200 and 28-300 superzooms not say cannot, but u will rarely go beyond 50mm. 70mm the most, so the extra ranges and glass elements only add onto da weight. Plus, superzooms usually are quite slow in focusing under low light. Not advisable to use it.

28-135 u can bring, but den with ur legs as physical zooming, why burden urself wif da extra weight?

in that case, I'll stick to what I have..22 for group, 50 and 100 for others.

Actually for the last 5 or 6 D&Ds, 28-75/2.8 (with 1.5X) was on most of the time. 12-24 is really for special perspective effects as well as venue snap lor.
Group pics for this is different from ADs, so can jalan jalan more leeway lor..... Else i think for D&Ds, you don't really drop below 28x1.5 usually. I shot one at Amara, small room 19 tables only i think and a 10m by 3m dance floor, still ok.

Alright i admit, i no moola to get AF-S 17-35 or 17-55, and sigma's offering sucks in terms of price/performance ratio.

Just look on the bright side, you don't get distortion on people's happy faces, which is the main point of D&D pics the client wants to see.
