Hi, i like to know what u ppl think abt this 2 len?
    105mm macro VR and 80-200mm both f2.8.

as for going oversea. what will u use?
105mm is good for macro and how abt portraits n street?
80-200mm can zoom and dun have macro shoot.

what will u use if u can only get one now.

Consider the encumbrance and style of usage you have.

Ask yourself these few questions :
Do you really take macros on a trip or will close ups do?

Do you really need 150-200mm? How many shots in a whole trip?

What type of environment will you shoot in? (ie. packed streets; open vistas; etc)

    Prime lens.
    Zoom lens.
Which focal length do you use most? If you were to pick either 1.. can you compromise? for eg.. 1 is lighter 1 is heavier.. 1 is fix..another is zoom and can get to 105 too..and etc etc.

In the end its you.. if you dontknow.. i dontknow how we can decide or our choice can affect you. Since we are not taking the photo for you...

Different styles for different people. I would take the zoom since I don't bother with macro anyway. Plus, I already have a 35mm, 50mm and a 85mm, so maybe I'd skip the105mm and have a zoom to cover the rest of the range.

I would choose 80-200mm for versatility..

Get both plus a good camera bag to keep them all. Don't forget the UV filters to protect them, the CPL filters, the gradual density type too, AND converter lenses and tubes, and macro lighting too. Plus you need a tripod to stablise the long shots and another monopod for situations where security does not allow tripods, there are a few good brands for tripod bags but preferably keep everything to the gitzos. Heard you are going overseas for portraits and street, maybe get a reflector to fill in the shadows too.

If get only one, get the 105mm. That is where the real versatility lies.

If only have this two lenses to choose, I would get 80-200mm + Raynox close up filter (just in case I wanna shoot macro). The only advantage I see of the 105mm macro VR is the VR.

If given another choice... I would go for the 70-200mm f2.8 VRII.
I am not a photographer, just someone who happened to have a couple of cameras.

105 is thebest for me. 1) lighter 2) can be use for portrait 3) fixed lens 4) both at F2.8 so i will still choose 105mm. 5)in the event you need to use for landscape 105 is fine too, just bring your tripod 6) bonus for macro cheers

Having own both for years and shooting multi genres of work, its the 105mm that is more versatile for me.

The ability to zoom matters more for general zooms from wide to short tele, and less so for mid-tele like the 70-300 range; (though still valuable) because at 70mm onwards half the time you are outdoors with ability to foot zoom, and for long teles above 300mm, it matter even less.
