    Default Is Singapore sinking?

Deep sinkhole appears in Clementi Road near NUS | AsiaOne Ride

First, it happened at Keppel Road. Then it happened at Clementi Road. There are sink holes appearing over Singapore. I am no geologist so what does this mean - there are huge mass of fluid material moving underground or the constant digging of MRT is causing material movement underground? If sink holes are to appear all over Singapore, will the land be rendered unsafe and useless?

Long ago I left a thread here on numerous deep excavations on small island of Singapore and wondered if it will have repercussions.

Many will be dismissive. As expected.

I think if a sink hole large enough to swallow up a HDB flat (and it is possible) appears, yeah I will be worried.

That's because you asked if it will cause earthquakes. You asked this after the Japan earthquake. That's why we were dismissive, because you showed a total lack of understanding about geology.

I have been to a place by the sea where there are so many sink holes that it is basically a waste land. Who knows when the next sink hole will open up so there is no development. That place I can understand as it is next to a sea.

I don't remember Singapore having sink holes open up in the middle of the road for the past 20 years. Correct me if I am wrong. We have experience some severe rain for the past few months. With so much excavation being done and blockoff of Marina barrage. Could huge masses of material be shifting underground in locations that are not being monitored by the qualitative surveyor.

The keppel is easy to understand. While the celmenti hole we have yet to know the reason. Don't 'kang cheong' our island is not sitting on the same soil you normally associate with 'sink holes' around the world. Otherwise we don't need to source for dumping ground for our rubbish liow. Haha
