Default Newbie: Fashion Show

Hi to all,

Just a newbie here to share some photo taken yesterday at City Hall and Suntec. I know some of the picture are quite blur... thank to my shaky hands and long focal length.

I am open to any comments. Thank you.

Hi Kimlee,

Well basically you got all the fundamentals wrong. Of course it doesn't matter really, just shoot more and you will definitely get it right sooner or later...really. It's like putting together piece by piece for a jigsaw puzzle, the more pieces you master the better the picture becomes.

And of course, a better camera helps (think you shot with a p&s?). I've shot with a p&s, really difficult to get good pics. I mean out of 100, only like 5-10 are really showable? They always say it's really the photographer which matters but up to a certain extent for this kind of stuff lar.

Hey pal,

Dont give up! at least you tried, I was there but never brought my new D70..

I see that you are quite away from the stage? show like that you need to be closer.. and of cos lighting wise will be brighter

and shooting in high ISO?

next time you can try diff WB to give you diff feel,
or shoot in raw, ps it to perfect!

my 2 cents..

Alright kimlee, since you are shooting with D70 (me too.... I make do with it + 3rd party glass), allow me to give some humble comments.

- I guess you can start off with not shooting from 2nd storey which is a pretty obvious mistake

- less headroom for the shots, cut off the top part of the head a bit also nevermind as you can later turn/crop it to a head close-up, at least its a shot saved. You can try shooting loose for a start (eg lots of space around the model). As you progress, you can start shooting tight (which is not easy with non static shots). You will gradually find it easier to shoot tight and still get the subject in focus and shake-free and with that pose you are looking for (eg legs crossed while strutting). Then it will be easier since you don't have to post-process your pics much.

- wait for the perfect moment. You shoot only when the model is looking at a good direction, be it you are looking for direct eye-contact or a certain facial profile, or when they are walking down the runway. There is no magic in this, concentrate in the VF and visualise the shot. Faster pace even better, the D70 is not a quick cam so it trains you to react faster.

Last but not least, enjoy the show. Shows like this allows me to network as well as have fun with my shooting friends/pals, other than brushing/maintain skills for other official/important shoots.

Thanks 2100 for your kind comments.

I shot from 2nd storey cause i did not know there was show in Suntec city. I arrive on the 2nd story and so just carry on with it. Anyway, the gnd floor was packed.

How does the pose look like? (legs crossed while strutting)

I did enjoy the show and no wonder i run out of memeory, will wait for the right moment next time.

hehe...no worries, you can machine gun your shots if you want, it's also a form of enjoyment. I don't view it as bad.

Of course nowadays i don't do that.... Usually the processing i do on my shots is just my regular workflow contained in a PS action (normal saturation boost, resize, usm). Cropping is usually minimal and just to present in a different aspect ratio to rid messy background or what....nothing much. Try to get it right the first time round so that you don't waste time in PS, imagine 3 mins each pic, then wanna show 30 pics in the gallery...what, 1.5 hrs in front of the computer click click tap tap? Cannot make it lar....eyes swollen hehehe For fashion shows and events, it's shoot more, not PS more.

Of course, that's my view lar. Other type of photography like weddings can PS, customers like then bo bian... Alright, stop typing liao...enjoy.

Ohhh....crossed leg while strutting, example
You need to time it so that you include AF lag in it so that it snaps while they cross-leg. Usually they will walk in unison, no problem.

A very kua-zhang example. example

Take a look at how the pros do it. Most are cross-legged. http://www.fashionshowroom.com/

Note : You have to be fast, coz models are walking. Esp if you are shooting at f2.8-f4 region with not a fast AF system. Else sure OOF. These pics are more demanding to take perfectly compared to static posed shots.

Is there a proper way to hold the D70 in the vertical position?

I guess not. But it's not a big issue unless you hold for long lar... 20-30 mins fashion show is ok. Ever shot 2-5 hrs events with it... Then of course use monopod due to weight lar.
