    Default Train squeeze

I have lived in Japan. I can say for sure that (a) the video is real, and (b) it happens everyday during peak hours. And mind you, Japan has arguably one of the best public transportation system in the world.

The problem with "planning parameters" is that you use it for the average case and often the peaking is not factored in too much because if you plan for the peak, you will have excess capacity during the non-peak (bad for bean counters). So will we get to be like this even after all the planned train lines are up?

How about staggering work hours to shave the peaks?

    goodness Uncle 5
Since u live in Japan don't you know their culture and habits. Japanese are known to be punctual for everything including work. If they arrive early or late for work it is consider rude . Even visiting leisurely also adhere to punctuality
hence Japanese always leave their house for work on time and that could attribute to the madness train rush. Our world class transportation ain't like that. Our women can comfortably ride in train

I have taken the trains in Tokyo many many times too during the rush hour.
While yes, I agree it's a huge squeeze, but I also have to say that it's somewhat more pleasant than what we have here.

Maybe because it's the lack of BO or the lack of noise, or maybe because the people actually actively look out and make way for you when you want to alight.
Here, people basically block the doors, listen to earphones and bo-chap you when you need to alight.
    Very different culture.

Basically I don't understand why are we always competing and comparing with what was worse off in other country. It was like... comparing to some third world country, our public transportation system is the best. Comparing to first world country... our public transportation prices is the lowest. I mean... come on... why don't we compare the efficiency of our public transportation system to established system in first world country and compare our prices to third world country?

And it is not as if "even the Japanese system had a tight squeeze" that there is any excuse for Singapore to follow them and instead and not improve on the system... it was the same as saying,

"there are corruption everywhere in all other nations. So we can also go that way." or "hmm... crime rate in other nations are climbing... I think we have more room for crime too."

I mean... that is so stupid with that type of comparism, if we wanted to compare, we compare everything... from culture, population, technology, economic, everything, rather than just single out something and use something worst off as comparism then say that, "See... we are better." I thought by now, we can do better than that?

    well done!

and i suspect maybe it is due to obedient sg ppl.. as long as the execuse sounds "pro" enough, it must be good..

just hope more locals will go 3rd world countries and experience how they live, travel there.. will be eye opener.. won't get con so easily..

We need to see the best and the not so good before we can determine our own standard. So compare or benchmarking is a normal process in life.

Having said that, we must also understand our limitations. Constructive comments and suggestions should be welcomed. Everybody likes to feel and thinks they have done a great job. If we just pad on everyone back and life suddenly becomes better, than that is easy.

I would prefer everyone to provides their views. However, when implementing, it may not suit everybody but the majority. That is how things work best.

My point is not quite "Japan best" or not... my point is that a system can change from "world's best" to "hell" and back all within the period of one day due to peaking. Saying ours is "world class" (during non-peak) is not enough in my opinion.

you do have a point, but then we are dealing with humans here.. not inanimate things... so it is ok to compare a PC to a PC, the ram, the speed, and we know which is better.. it is straightfoward..

i guess japanese do not like to squeeze too... no one in the world like to suffer..

but this is good for those who prefer to run a country like a company..

i would prefer sg to focus on other aspects to generate growth, instead of relying on massive FT import..

but if you ask me what suggestion, i am sorry, i can't answer you.. I don't work in the ministries so i don't have the answer... i believe it is not easy, hence the so called high salaries is being paid to them..
