Default Are Canon lenses made in Japan?

Just wondering if all Canon lenses are made in Japan? Or are some made in Taiwan? Would that results in different prices if it were made in Japan (more ex)? Thanks!

Hi

i think not all are. For sure the Ls are made in Japan (at least that's wat i like to think ), but for the cheaper consumer lenses, i have no doubt they are not all made in Japan - making it elsewhere keeps costs down and translates to lower prices for consumers.

Nikon already have lenses made in China, and Canon no doubt will have factories there.

And let's face it, China is THE place to be now, whether we like it or not.......

the main issue is not whether it will be cheaper if it is not made in Japan, but whether the same level of quality control and assembly tolerances will be applied to those "foreign" assembly plants, ie is a lens made in China more likely to break than one made in Japan..........

Point taken regarding quality - agreed

The trigger for this qn was the 50mm f/1.8 II lens which I have bought says "made in Japan" but the Camera body I have (EOS300) says made in Taiwan.

Funny thing is I think I might have paid a little too much for the 50mm, since I've checked the Canon (Sg site) and found it SGD10 cheaper than the price I've paid! So u see, I was wondering if I was conned or if the same lens is also made in other countries...

The Camera WorkShop in Peninsula, where there are a lot of used lenses. I was looking for this lens at Foto Guide and CP, but couldn't find it. Saw it at this shop, and just bought it at SGD170.

The website states 160... Kenna conned? But funny thing is, I was recommended by my friend to this shop as he said the prices were one of the lowest... bad move I guess.

Hey, regarding the EF50 f1.8 II, I was looking for it a while back too. Most places out of stock and I got mine in HK. It cost very slighty more than what I was quoted here but I got it anyway cos I can't resist a 1.8 Anyway I think you started off on the right track and have FUN shooting!!!

Bought my new 50mm 1.8 at Funan Centre at S$130 about the same price as in HK. I find the new 50 mm not as good as the discontinued Mk 1 especially the quality eg. all plastic body for the new model.

I got mine 2 weeks ago at Alan Photo for $135.
Took some shots but not developed yet.
No prior experience with the Mk 1, so dunno whether
which is better.

I've not developed the pics yet, but I do hope they turn out good since I am using Xtra 400 and I have taken a few long exposure shots (8 secs)

BTW, the lens that came with it (28-90mm, f4-5.6 no USM) is it really very lame? I've been reading mostly bad reviews of it as PhotographyReview.com. It came with the Kit (I know I shouldn't, but I bought it as a kit for a very low price).

What would be the next lens I should get from the 50mm f/1.8? I won't get it so soon, yet. Must learn more about this WUSIWYG 50mm first

Suggestions?

Also, it is necessary to get a hood for it?

Anyone used a close up lens with it for macros? Good shots?

Lotsa questions.... sorry if it is lengthy...

Exposures longer than 1/8 of a second or so should be used on a tripod because its difficult to avoid camera shake without one. Unfortunately, I am unable to help you with your other questions.

You definitely have to use a tripod for long exposures.

I wouldn't take the reviews written on PhotographyReview.com too seriously if I were you. Lame or not, you be the judge when you get the photos back.

What's wrong with using the 50mm on your 28-90?

imho the f4 is the limiting factor more than so called glass quality... as a newbie shd worry about sharpness/contrast and other $$$ factors later. shd try to worry about exposure, DOF, composition etc etc... no point having super lead crystals i fu just take snapshots of gatherings and stuff... 8)

Fastbreak,

Yes, not all Canon lenses are made in Japan. The cheapest consumer ones like 28-80, 28-90 etc are made in Taiwan, if I'm correct.

I think even the 50 f/1.8 II is NOT made in Japan? I'm surprised yours is. But S$170 is way off for 2nd hand!! (If it is an identical one that most pple buy from here.)

Since u're just starting out, I wouldn't worry about which is the next lens to get and so forth. Concentrate on understanding the basics of your camera and photo taking skills.

As for the 28-90, I've not tried it but have read bad reviews of it practically everwhere. But like I said, don't worry about that first. It's not so bad than it sounds.

Hoods are important but not essential for all occasions. Shoot more first and see if u need it. I think there is no point to buy a hood for your 28-90 as u might change lens soon.

As for close up lenses with the 28-90, you can explore it too but I should expect the image quality to be somewhat affected.

Enjoy!!

Oh dear... CW is usually quite reasonable. A new 50/1.8-II with warranty is $135 at Fotoguide. I'm amazed at CW's pricing.

The 50/1.8-II and 50/1.4 I used were both Japanese made. So were all the Canon lenses and cameras I've used. Maybe they are moving production elsewhere only recently(?)

Hi,

Posting here to share prices.

I just got myself the below items at MS Colour (Ang Mo Kio Central) during lunch time
1) Canon 50mm f1.8 @ $135 (lens made in Japan)
2) ES-62# Lens Hood @ $25
4) Hoya filter @ $8
3) BP 200 (Battery Pack for my EOS 300) @ $50
Above Prices are inclusive of 3% GST

Last week, I saw a used 50mm f1.8 Mk 1 selling at Primes (I think so.. it's just next to CP) at $140.
It really looks much more solid than the new Mk 2

P.S. Yesterday, TCW quoted me a new 50mm f1.8 at a very high price (higher than $170)
Hmmm... Maybe I don't act cool enough

Most likely to be FD. EF 50/1.4's don't sell for less than 450 (sticker price)... typically a little less.

Surprise that they quote so much more than local distrbuted set.

Anyway, some lady bought 50mm/f1.4 @ $660 at AP on
same day as I got my 50/f1.8 II.
