It more than 3 yr ago, when i first bought my 1st digicam. Intially, I just wanna to have a camera which is cheap and nice to take some photos together with my current girlfriend. We are 7mths together during that time. And she alway hopes to have some photos together with me. She even go to the extend of buying dis-posable cam. How silly we were?
In order to have our own photos and able to catch up the christmas festival, i bought a 2nd hand Canon Digicam (Powershot A20). I think i roughly pay around near $500+ with that basic camera. It only come with 8MB during that time. I try to take some nice shots, but most of the shot failed me. So dissapointing. nevertheless, after a year of playing around the camera. I finally got my way into photography. i work hard on my composition, read up alot. And borrow DSLR from friends. There is when i am improving and took better photos. I didnt buy any camera in-between. As i alway believe good photography doesnt alway = good equipment. It will give u more a larger area of possibility but that doesn't works wonders. So many years. I've used before so many different camera too. But when u really went back to the time on WHY u buy a camera? What will be your reasons? For me; the reason will be the memories with my love ones (be it my girlfriend/family). What yours? Very 1st photos which i took using a Digicam (Powershot A20) ![]() |

For me,
It was my Dad's influence. He too was into photography so have Nikon FM laying in the house. Then I went for an exchange program in Canada (UBC) so dad got me an lumix LC-20 so I can take pictures and email them back home. Then not so siao. until my girlfriend ask me to go with her to the canon photomarathon thingy. whoa. after that hooked already. furthermore she even won a special complimentary price with her P&S sony.. yeah. Well My aunt gave me nikon EM and so playing around with it also but developing so expensive! Now with digital much cheaper and faster to learn. Take picture already can see the picture. so well still got loads to learn and improve. |

Very frankly, if I were to be you, the objective is to just take sui sui photos with the significant half, I will either go to the studio, or get someone to help taking it, no need to invest into any camera. Of course, if you were to talk about sweet memories for the significant moments (trip out together, birthday, etc.), a normal point and shoot camera will do...no need to be that solid lar...afterall....P&S camera does do the trick... As for my objectives, very simple: I simply love to capture things, and appreciate them in the way that I want. Specifically, I love human facial expression, particularly the older people. I love mountain shots, seaside, sunset, and I usuaully turn the visual effect into my personal philosophy. Yes, composition is important, so does light source and the third rule! Read more if you could, see more professional photos, not just to admire, but try to use the magic words: How, why, when, where, what, why, who...you will certainly be able to learn more and faster.... Happy snapping! |

If i am rich, i dun mind hire a full time photographer standing beside me and waiting for my instructions on when and where to take my photos with my family.
This is also very Frankly most of the time, people will own a Pns --> prosumer/DSLR. Isnt it the way people starting to like taking photo and develope into a hobby? Some people like sunset, some like natural. Not forgetting some guys (or maybe even gals) like taking photos of model. We all have a story on why, and how. I am merely stating on how it all started out. U have ur story and i have mine. A photograph is to tell a simple story; be it others or yourself. I prefer the latter one. My story, my family. Different people have different views. When u become a father, u will get what i mean. Meantime, enjoy ur snapping on pretty chicks/ and to some macho man! regards, Vinz. |

I don't wish to dress you down. I believe that many Lumixers who had encountered with you in the forum feedback that you are rather defensive, your word of choice are offensive. I do want to let you know that you should do a good reflection on yourself, else, you will have problem here. I dun want to flame you, but I can't help. This is not just my opinion, and if you want to take it personally in the offensive and defensive mode, chances are you will be ignored. |

Hey. Quite similiar to me. One of my first camera was the good ol' Nikon FM2 too. heh
Gave up as i was only a student then. no $$$ to pay for films and developing. only started all over again in recent years cos of digital. true that you no longer have to "shoot and pray" cos you can review the photos straight. THEN again, i miss the feeling of carrying the film to the lab and wait for it to be developed. The anxiety of seeing how the photos would turn out is, how can i put it... darn shiok? lol Any one else feel the same? |

BTW, people. No offence, but i do think there's no reason to kick mud when the situation didnt call for it. I hardly post here, but i do read these forums very regularly (cos trying to hit 50 posts to get 100 pm.. heh). Let's keep to the topic yea? Im still interested to see Ruth Soh's apprentice's work. =)

Photography was a matter of time for me. My mum runs a minilab in Yishun, so have been seeing negatives and photos since i was a kid.
My mum started SLR photography back in the early 90's and after some time gave it up as she did not have time. So I picked it up, and by reading 2 books from kodak "100 techniques of photography" began my journey into photography. Did not shoot much, and always got scolding for taking abstract shots...father always say why you take the shot got no people one! Very expensive the chemical and paper!" Luckily for digital cameras! My first a Nikon E775, won in lucky about 3-4 years back showed me how great digital photography was.. can edit, can delete.. And so last year in November, bought the long one, after seeing it on magazine.. mmm... long with IS... wow...Leica lens... woooo.... f2.8 constant waaaaaa.... such an unbelievable camera ne!!! Thank you for reading about how I started photography kekekeke ![]()

started out in the mid-90s when i was still a film student. but interest didn't really take off until i was able to buy my first 35mm film SLR (a pentax) with some of the money i earned during the holidays. went around shooting anything and everything...anyone i could drag along and even their pets.
was then posted overseas during my NS days and i decided i shouldn't let the days and memories just pass by like that. took my camera along and took it everywhere i went during my off-days. came back with a lot of negatives n prints n memories...i remembered i had to leave the albums behind, because they took up too much space n weight started working life by shooting weddings and ROMs... that's when i was formally inducted into the Dark Side (Nikon). never looked back since and was suitably impressed by the system to invest in my own Nikons, a F100 and D100. this was previously boosted by my pleasant past experiences in handling the FM2 and F90X. am now also a photographer's assistant...learning the ropes. i realised there is really NO easy way in photography, especially in the trade of commercial photography. still shoot weddings and PR events to get by. that's the summary, so far ![]() |

Lynch: the think i miss about the FM or old 35mm flim SLR was the winding shutter spring before taking the picture. Now digital is wait for the picture to write to memory card.
ling13: yeah!! looking forward to be able to see your pictures. ![]() |
