Default Do u all use a uv filter to protect ur EF lens?

I have one for my g2 becozlens is pretty much fixed.
but for ef lens most of them have different diameter so if u were to have more than 1 lens u prolly have to buy different uv filters for the different lens rite? (heard uv filters might degrade quality too)
any1 here doesn't use any at all? i dun feel like buyin but on the other hand i can't stand the thought of my lens being scratched accidently or something.

It's good practice to use one on each of your lenses. Don't read too much into the "UV filter affecting quality" thing, unless you use VERY GOOD lenses and print VERY BIG. Generally, if you use a reasonably good filter, you should be fine. Some swear by some German brand, others Japanese, your choice.

Of course!

As amatures it's recommended that we get all sorts of insurance for our lens. A UV filter for peace of mind and a hood for added security. Dropped my SLR with lens recently...saved by the hood while the UV filter protected the front element from the resulting mud splash on the ground.

I agree with Ckiang's view...for me, I have a UV filter for all my lenses.

Hi

i use UV filters and lens hoods on all my lenses at all times. i think as a form of protection, UV filters are practical, cheap and very useful.

using the appropriate hoods too helps in protection and cutting down of external light sources (prevents flare) which helps improve contrast in your shots.

You can buy the original hood (VERY expensive, imagine paying like $50 for a hollow piece of velvet lined plastic with 4 petals) or some 3rd party ones. The recommended original hood is usually mentioned in the manual of the lens.

It is a must for me cuz I'm very protective of my gears. Can't imagine without one on my 70-200 f4...

Hmm..
Something to ask again:
I thought a lens hood is to prevent flare and stuff?
What protection does it offer?

Is it that when you drop the lens, at least the front element won't hit the ground head on?

It can also prevent rain and dust from landing on the front element.

yes.... how to prevent dust from falling on the front element or the filter with a lens hood??? dust can just float around or be blown onto it.

Yes I do. In fact for all my EF lens I have a UV filter attached to protect it from scratches and accidental knocks.

I ever smashed the UV filter on my EF 70-300mm lens. The actual surface is unscarred... lucky.

I swear by protective filters after which.. only lens that dun have a filter for now is the EFS Kit Lens....
