Just to add on, one of the reasons why night flash photography with slow shutter speed can still get sharp picture, is because the light bounce back from the subject to the sensor at faster speed.

    FYI,

all lights are travelling at the same speed, be it ambient light or flash light.

If you use the flash, you may need to dial it down by a half stop or a full stop. You don't want your friends' faces to look powder white.

    Got so complicated ?

Just use ETTL. Just make sure ISO is high enough to get enough shutter speed with the right metering.

just get better camera that can handle high ISO and fast lens

get few assistants to carry around light stand and LED light, and a torch light to assist AF

at least that what I observe from this video

dunno if someone has suggested this yet, but I will meter on the background, then adjust your flash setting so that it nicely exposes the foreground. tadah. best of both worlds.

Usually that works for bright situations (sun behind subject) where ambient is brighter than subject, the u meter for background to get nice bkgd exposure, but u end up with a underexposed subject. That's when the flash comes in... no?

bonrya is correct, it will work.

but will not work for TS, since he don't want to use tripod.
