Cathay and Ruby Photo both sell 120 format (medium format) films, possibly the largest collections you can find in SG..... And yes, the Holga uses 120 format film. Not sure can go to Ruby Photo there the people will be willing to help answer your questions (from my personal experience as newbie).

Just wondering, you did not check whether you can utilise the Holga fully before you buy? Like getting the films to be processed, printed etc?

best if you start with iso 400 film. The Holga has a fixed aperture and only 2 shutter speed selections (other than 'B' if you mod it) so be careful with exposure. negative film should give you the latitude you need.
As far as i know, Cathay Photo sells the 120 film slightly cheaper than Ruby, at least in bulk :P
but frankly, a holga isn't a very good intrduction to medium format. I bought mine off another CS-er for $50 and regret it fully :P heh. Sorry for the OT.

just buy any 120 film for the holga...if you use slides, cross process it....if you use b/w films, dev it yourself - then scan it.

the reason that some/most would be disappointed with a holga is that ... it's just not sharp, soft focus to blur focus...cant focus anyway, just compose...and if you want something a little sharp, get a WOCA...buy any asa 400 or 800 film will be fine.

here's a shot that i took from my Woca using the 6x4.5 adapter, HP5 film.

a cam is just a tool...if you know how to use it...you'll get those killer results.

What do you mean by special film? Infra-red? Orthochromatic?

The Holga is a cheapo camera with cheapo lens. But it gives a good straight out of the camera old looking photo that some like while some do not like.

hey hey ~~~

i just got my own holga 120G ... and haven't erally tried it yet ... but you know, it would be fun if us newbies got together with our holgas ... finish the rolls in a single day and devlelop together and see the shots we've taken ...

i think that'd be fun ... cos i'm personally looking for pple who would like to snap with me ... and also , if i'm not wrong , those seed outings are mostly made up of d/slr users ...

perhaps we can have our own holga seed outing ???

just my two-cents ...

It's the same with any cameras... some hate the SLR, some love it. Some hate the leica, some swears by it. Some hate digital photography (I do), while some love it. It's the same with anything in life too. Some love to talk about politics, some totally hate it when people talk political stuff to them! It's just human.

For me, anything below 6x7 frankly don't fancy me that much. So Holga is definitely not for me!

lol many of those "holga" pics you see on lomo websites are enhanced through photoshop. given a little saturation boost, etc. the only natural thing about the holga is vignetting and light leaks :P heh.

Hello, I am new to medium format and I have a few questions to ask.

1) Other than Ruby and cathy, where can I find a shop in Singapore that sells B&W 120mm film???

2) Can I bring it to any neighbourhood shops for development? Will they print it in 6x6 format or in 3R or 4R sizes???

3) How much does it cost for processing and developing a roll of B&W negatives??

Would greatly appreciate your replys.

answers, as far as i know:
1) i haven't seen any neighbourhood shops that sell 120 film, much less B&W ones. i got mine from ruby.
2) i tried two neighbourhood shops in the marine parade area and they both don't accept 120. i think the normal all-in-one digital process machines can't handle 120 and they have to go to the professional labs.
3) developing only i think is about $5 more or less. other than ruby, you can take your negs to konota or colour lab in adelphi.

Default lomo film

yar agree. .I've been looking around for 120 film in neighbourhood in the west.. but i guess 120 is only common in cathay and ruby. I'm lucky to be able to get my color neg develop at the dev lap near my home. My black and white will be done at ruby at the moment. till i master the developing of B & W.. how the thing will turn out haha. i also not sure cause i jsut send in my first roll of B and W. haha.. will post the print of ruby when i get the films on tuesday? I also own a holga. but i'm moving to lubitel.

If you are using your first roll of 120 on a holga.. jsut take note of the light. I wasted two roll of films underexposed because i didn't use flash in indoor places. not suitable for indoor without flash.

when you get to fam lomo... haha move to something else.. holga should be jsut for start ups and fun shots.

Will be organizing holga seed outing haha.. or rather entry level seed outing.

cheers have fun with your holga!! or anyother lomo!!

Thanks Wingless! I was quoted $5.50 for processing today("Sunday") at "some" lab in P.Plaza. I am wondering, can i process at neighbour shops?? Anyone has any good experience developing their negatives at neighbourhood shops?? Perhaps, you can recommend me???

some kodak shop can process 120 film also ... eg. my neighbourhood , the kodak shop can only develop my 120 color. but not b & w because they do not run D process. fujifilm some do some don't.. some do 120 process but then have to wait for a week like that. my place jurong west ext. does 120 color neg processing @4 bucks.

woah that's pretty cheap...

anyway.. i have one more question to ask..( i'm going to buy my film tomorrow btw..)

ahem anyway... for the 120 film, there's negative and the positive film.. most poeple use negative is it? or do you use positive..i think positives are soooooo coool!! but i hardly hear people mention.

are they the same price?

does cathay sell? i forgot to ask and i was blur so when i asked for processing and she asked negative i said yea..

but for both negative and positive is the development price the same?
