Buying S40 - What to look out for

Hi all

After months of dragging and indecisiveness, i have decided to get the Canon S40 maybe later today or tomorrow.

As this will be my DC purchase, what do i have to look out for when i purchase the camera.
Eg. Dead pixels? Whats that? Are they those missing spots on the lcd screen?

And if some sample shots are taken, what do i look our for?

Sorry for all the novice questions.
